More Formula One TV Details

"RPM 2Night" commentator Robin Miller of The Indianapolis Star gives some
details about the Formula One TV contract:

TV revenue is $350 million annually.

$180 million of the TV revenue is distributed to the teams.

However, the money is distributed to teams based on performance. McLaren and
Ferrari each receive $22 million, while even a team with no points last year
like British American Racing (BAR) received $6 million.

"Television became Ecclestone's main focus, not the paying customers. He
recognized the potential of TV and how little of it was being utilized. 'I
don't care if nobody shows up at the track, it's television that will drive
this sport,' he said nearly 10 years ago when an estimated 50 million people
were watching. Today, 350 million tune in to a Grand Prix 17 times a year."

"The Economist" Takes A Major Shot at F1's Ecclestone; TV Details Given

Britain's leading business magazine, The Economist, takes a major swing at
F1 czar Bernie Ecclestone in its July 15th issue and, in the process, gives
us a peek at F1 TV details:

The 17 races pull in a total of more than 5 billion viewers.

The stated TV revenue for 1999 is $241 million, a number which most people
assume is severely understated.

That many already? -Well, ok, I wasn't aware of that, but it doesn't make
that big an impact on the calculation (88million).

As it should be, certainly when a completely proposterous number is claimed.

Yes, F1 is only mildly popular in the US, so using an US viewing figure
would have been very unfair. That's why I chose a local figure as people
here are fairly F1 minded.

Yes, F1 is very popular in some parts of Asia, but I think that is offset by
the lack of TV sets there. China, India, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan are
part of Asia too and I very much doubt 50% of the population there has
access to a TV (let alone F1). This is why I think I was very generous with
my assumption half the world is in a position to watch F1.

Not a clue... is it broadcast live around the world at all? -I assume
Germany and Japan (both countries with a large US military presence) get it,
but it sure isn't "on" here.

How many countries are there in total? And what percentage of global
population lives there? How many of those have access to the coverage?

I.e. what is the potential audience? -I have a good feeling my 2 billion was
pretty generous.

I'm talking 'bout live viewership because the person who released that quote
made it sound that way. If it had said 350million people are _exposed_ to
the coverage of each race in some form or other, I'd have no trouble
believing that. Watching implies "wanting to see", IMO.

Ah yes, anything someone on Bernie's staff says is true, because he's
wealthy and important. Anything I say is rubbish, because I'm just an
average Joe.

You come across as such a snob David, it makes the hairs on the back of my
neck stand up.

Not at all, I'm just saying they're presented in their most positive light
and in a slightly misleading way.

"...tune in at some time to watch some part.." rather. ;-)

No question, there aren't many global sports (Nascar is hardly a global
sport, unfair comparison) which can rival it as Olympic meetings or WC
Soccer matches aren't scheduled every two weeks.

But 350million people watching the races together... no.

Well, there you go.   I wonder how many of those 5 billion are repeat
offenders though.

as a Newspaper reporter.

(John Bodin would have more ACCURATE info about Miller's situation.)
