Nothing against GPL at all. It's an excellent sim.

Like many people, I find the comments by some GPL fans about other sims to
be ridiculous. By their comments, they are also criticizing the merits of
the people who play them.

Forgot to add, it's been going on now for THREE years. That's the really
strange aspect of the behavior.

You're right, it is strange.  Most companies don't support their
products that long (Thanks, Papy!), not do they usually make the quality
high enough for such staying power.  You've given the best tribute for
GPL!

The fact that it has been going on for 3 years now is a testament to GPL,
and the awesome sim that it is. Throw in the fact that Papy still supports
it, even if it is a couple guys working on it from home,  makes it even more
incredible. I don't find this behaviour strange in the least.
Do you think F1RC will still get this kind of press and support 3 years down
the road? Or any other sim presently out for that matter?

Actually, the GPL forum at High Gear Forums has about 14,000 posts
since it was created, as about 10,000 posts were deleted in a
technical glitch a few months back.  Also, the GPL forum at HG is
relatively new (1 year old) versus the RC forum which has been around
a couple years. Given the same amount of time, the GPL forum would
probably have close to 30K posts, if not more.

I just dont want anyone to be misled by misinformation.

MTM2 has been out for three years now, and the other night at 1:30 a.m.EST I
saw 100 people playing online at the Zone. There are over a thousand user
created tracks, and who knows how many trucks. Why? Is it better than GPL,
or are they simply both excellent titles without sequels?

Three years from now, F1RC won't be getting the same support because there
will be newer versions due to it's success (GPL failed and the MTM series
was ended when TRI and MS parted).

Two years and a half.

It's a great arcade game, that's why.

GPL did not fail.  If you think it failed, then F1RC also failed.

I wrote that sentence because on the Usenet, you WILL find your supposed
quote if you search a little.  It's not related to the World Wide Web.
Everything ever posted about GPL in this newsgroup is archived.

You have much to learn my young padawan...

It's been going on for three years because that's how long GPL has been at
the top.  I haven't bought every racing game/sim in the last three years,
but the ones I have bought have offered little competition to GPL.

For instance - F1 2000 had poor graphics, a slow 3d engine and poor AI.  GP3
had iffy physics and poor graphics.  TOCA 2 had arcade physics.  Rally
championship felt like the cars had no suspension.  Rally masters had
dreadful controller setups, meaning it couldn't be played at all on my
wheel.

There were a few decent titles, GP 500, Superbike 2000, MBTR and Sports Car
GT were all solid 8/10 games, but when given the option of playing those
game and playing GPL, they don't get a look-in.

Basically, it all comes down to the sheer thrill of controlling the GPL
cars.  The man against machine battle.  Trying to put the 400 bhp down on
the track without losing the rear end, catching the spins, keeping cool
enough to avoid locking the brakes at a crucial point.  And trying to do all
this better than everyone else on Vroc.

No other game can offer all this for me.

Wrong............again.

I was beta testing MTM2 almost 3 years and 5 months ago. I know because I
have the MTM2beta 1 CD in front of me marked 2-3-98. It was released in the
early summer of 98. My track for it was completed in August '98.

(This post is sort of in the wrong place because my newreader isn't showing
all posts)

How many posts there are on any particular forum doesn't prove anything.
LegendsCentral have boards for every type of racing game/sim yet their
modern F1 boards, or their N4 boards have virutally no posts, yet GPL has
18,000.  That's because GPL players hang out at LegendsCentral, whereas
RC2000 players hang out at HG.  r.a.s is not GPL fans headquaters, in fact
most GPL players I know have never heard of it.

Anyway popularity is an extremely poor guide to quality or worth.  The worst
albums sell the best, the worst programs on tv get the most viewers, the
worst films gross the most money.  Popularity just proves how many idiots we
share this rock with.

HG is not a single game specific web site like Legends Central, yet RC2000
and F1RC have a huge amount of posts compared to other games (GP3,
F12000/CS, N4, GPL).

I was trying to remember how this topic started, and it was your post which
said, "Just look at the number of posts here relating to F1RC, RC2000 and
GPL.  You
really think there's just a handful of people here playing GPL?   GPL gets
over ten times the number of posts that F1RC and RC2000 get."

I simply pointed out that it depends on the forum (just like your Legends
Central point). If "How many posts there are on any particular forum doesn't
prove anything", then why did you make the comment in the previous
paragraph? :-)
