It's been going on for three years because that's how long GPL has been at
the top. I haven't bought every racing game/sim in the last three years,
but the ones I have bought have offered little competition to GPL.
For instance - F1 2000 had poor graphics, a slow 3d engine and poor AI. GP3
had iffy physics and poor graphics. TOCA 2 had arcade physics. Rally
championship felt like the cars had no suspension. Rally masters had
dreadful controller setups, meaning it couldn't be played at all on my
wheel.
There were a few decent titles, GP 500, Superbike 2000, MBTR and Sports Car
GT were all solid 8/10 games, but when given the option of playing those
game and playing GPL, they don't get a look-in.
Basically, it all comes down to the sheer thrill of controlling the GPL
cars. The man against machine battle. Trying to put the 400 bhp down on
the track without losing the rear end, catching the spins, keeping cool
enough to avoid locking the brakes at a crucial point. And trying to do all
this better than everyone else on Vroc.
No other game can offer all this for me.
