Good FF whell WITHOUT pedals ?

by LL » Sat, 18 Dec 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

Sorry for the last question, I had to be more precise.

Is there a GOOD (or which is the best) FF whell without foot pedals ?

In other words a good FF wheels with the acceleration and brake function
behind the wheel and not on footpedals.

Or can you use the so called "european gear shift" to accelerate on the good
FF wheel (apparently LWFF and ACT LABS are the most famous), are these "gear
shift" behind the wheel analog or digital ?

Thanks and merry chrismas, hanukkah and ramadan.

To the best of my knowledge, the only wheel with gas and brake on the wheel
is the Guillemot Ferrari FF wheel. It has gas and brake under the shifter
paddles and they work when the foot pedals are not connected.

Hey GTX, what function, if any, do they have when the foot pedals are
connected? Been deciding between the LWFF and the GFFF. Is it true that the
GFFF is single axis on the pedals? That would make sense if it uses buttons
as an alternate.

Is this phenomena not common to all FF wheels? if so why haven't we heard
about it before. I've felt that my TM Force GT was a bit difficult to handle
in new games but I soon get used to it.

Andi.

i tried the GFFF for a few days. it is very well made and has everything i
am looking for: USB, dual axis (you can set this in software like the LWFF,
separate gear shifter knob as an option, loads of well designed buttons
including 2 four way 'field of view' buttons, good gear shifters behind the
wheel etc etc, even looks quite good. By the way the levers below the gear
shift paddles that can be used as throttle and brake are full analogue
controls just like pedals and have a good feel and length of throw.
Unfortunately when the pedals are connected they cease to function so you
cant use one as an analogue hand clutch :(
BUT . . . .
the steering was unstable, didn't give enough rotation (even tho  the wheel
gives over 180degrees it somehow didn't work well in the game. i set all my
steering ratios in GPL to 20/1 and it still wasn't enough. Although it's
I-Force the FF didn't feel anything like as good as the LWFF. Also I found
the pedals unusable - the springs were FAR too soft. Otherwise an OK design.
Maybe fixable with new springs: because i decided to return the wheel I
didn't open up the pedal base.
It may suit some people and it was surprisingly well made.
Hope this helps

Can you connect your own pedals to the unit?  I use an "old" TM wheel-only
controller with the paddles, hooked up to CH rudder pedals - I really don't
like any of the pedals that come with the FF wheels I've seen so far...

The paddles for gas and brake don't work for anything when the pedals are
connected. The paddle shifters and stick shifter are different buttons. At
first I thought this to be a nice feature, but now I wish they shared
buttons. Some games don't let you use buttons 5 and 6, and thats where the
shift lever is. If the game  also doesn't support keyboard and joystick
together, you have no way of programming the shift lever. Not that is
matters much, the lever is fairly stiff and the throw is too long. I'm fussy
about pedals, but these work fine. Good range and medium spring tension.
Also, the end travel of the pedals is not dead space. This may be the first
set of pedals that I won't modify. I'm new to FF so this is an adjustment
for me. I used to drive with the stick shifter all the time and only one
hand on the wheel. Now I find myself with both hands on the wheel and using
the paddles, even in SCGT.  My times on Lime Rock with a loaded GTQ were
about 42 secs. with my old MadCatz Andretti Racing Wheel, and they are in
the low 44's with the Ferrari wheel. Obviously  more practice is needed.

I promised a bunch of people here and elsewhere that I would review this
wheel with an emphesis on driving in  different games, rather than a more
technical review that we see a lot. I will do this, but I'm in hopes of
being able to do a comparison, head to head, with an Act Labs and Shifter,
so I'm going to hold off for a couple days.

When the foot pedals are plugged in, the column gas/brake are disconnected.
The pedals are split axis.
