NR2003 Reboot issue FIXED

by mjones5 » Fri, 14 Nov 2003 09:57:37

I finally figured it out.  It is Norton Antivirus, I noticed in the system
event log that evey error that caused the crash while running NR2003, was
Norton related. I have always used Norton with out any problems, but on this
system Norton was causing the problem.  I disabled it and ran the first
whole race with out any problems.
Hope this helps someone else.

P.S. I configured it not to load on reboot, so I rebooted and then ran the
race, after the race just re-enabled it.

While Norton Anti Virus is great for detecting virus', you should not be
running it when you either play games (because games are CPU dependant,
and NAV, if set to run in the background, will eat up CPU cycles as well
as do *** things otherwise) or install any software of any kind.
ALWAYS disbale NAV before playing any game.

I used to notice this phenomenon.  Not for a while though.

Bad advice. Not using Norton is a lot easier.

Lets get this straight, you think disabling AV is not a good idea?

Disabling Norton is always a good idea.

I'll bite on this one.  Practicing good virus avoiding ettiquette is also an
effective 'anti-virus' choice and in many cases, as mjones53 has discovered,
you can have more problems running AV software than you can by carrying a
few viruses on your computer.  95% of virus writers' main purpose for
writing a virus is just to be recognized by the big AV companies.

FYI... If it is Norton 2004 then you should research the problems that their
new Product Activation "feature" is causing.  I'm not sure if this is
related, but you never know...

In fact, I believe all Norton 2004 products are having the problem.

No more upgrades for me!

I used to feel the same way.  In fact, my *** boot partition never had
Norton on it until recently.

Now, I just don't think it's safe to run without it any more.

I don't see any performance issues, at least on my machine.

I have XP Pro, and I have always run Norton's AV on it - I consider it one
of the best, and contrary to what a lot of people may state, I do not see it
using much in the way of resources.
The only time I disable auto-protect is when I install or update sofware. I
even leave it on when paying games, including N2003, and see no hit in
performance versus disabling it.

Now, to clarify I am still running Norton's 2002 AV, so I don't know if
later versions hit the resources more or not...
