Just bought the Hercules Geforce 2 Ultra card in order to get a better
performance from Nascar 4. However, I notice I can overclock this card, but
I'm not sure about how far I can go with this 'safely'. Also which drivers
are the best for the Hercuiles at the moment, Nvidia's own Detonator 3 or
Hercules' own 7.52 drivers

I've never had a Nvidia graphics chip before so I am very ignorant about
this. For reference, I have an Athlon 900, 256mb ram, SB Live, and Hercules
Geforce 2 Ultra.

Any help appreciated.

An Ultra will handle everything N4 can throw at it with ease, your cpu would
be the bottle neck so overclocking the Ultra wouldn't make much if any
diference. but your athlon should easly do 1Gig or more which would give you
a few more fps.

I played around with overclocking my GTS a bit for N4 and it reduced the
performance.  I am now back to the standard settings.  My feeling after
tweaking and playing is that the Ultra would be more than capable of
handling N4.  If you are experiencing slow downs it will be because of lack
of CPU (although an Athlon 900 should be fine).

I too thought an Athlon 900 would be ample for N4, with the new Ultra card.
But plainly not. With only 25 cars, 'world' slider to half and trackside and
mirror to a minimum, I am still only getting 28-34 FPS (little better than
when I had a V5500). IAll my drivers are upto date.  have seen others, with
a lesser spec than mine say they are doing in the 40-50's FPS during a race.
What am I doing wrong? Perhaps overclocking my CPU is the answer but I have
no idea how to do this.

N4 & Geforce Overclocking

Better yet. turn off Vsync and disable FSAA. I have a plain jane Geforce256
on a PIII 700, 256MB RAM and with most things on (dirt debris shadows
specular highlights etc) I get 35-60 fps online in races at most tracks
(including the sort tracks where frames are notoriously low).

FSAA is the biggest of resource hogs I have ever seen and is plainly not
worth the slowdown IMHO. If you are one of the guys that just have to have
things like FSAA and smoke to race online, then yes you will have to wait
until 2 gig processors are out and get a 128mb video card (GF3 maybe) to be
able to realize any kind of acceptable frame rates. Turn off FSAA and smoke
and I bet you get 40-50 fps like the rest of us. If you go with the super
fast cpu and big video card, be prepared to install an A/C unit in or near
your computer, lol.

Just a suggestion,

hb

Turn off Vsync and bump down the FSAA.

I not trying overclocking but like to get the most.  Found the vsync and
turning it off almost doubled my FPS.

How do you disable FSAA (or even tell if it's on)?  I'm running
Geforce256 on Win98 and couldn't find how to modify the setting.

I never heard of Hercules 7.52 drivers.  Last I knew (a week or two
ago), they only had 6.35 drivers.

As far as stability with N4 for me, I installed (but 1st uninstalled
the Herc drivers) the NVidia Detenator 3 (6.50).  I was never able to
finish Daytona.

Still in testing mode though.  I've been overly optimistic before.

I have a Hercules GTS Pro (64MB DDR).

Where/How do you turn off FSAA?  Is it under display properties or in
the game?

I have a Hercules GeForce 2 GTS Pro.

Thanks,
