sim which realy require wheel on PC ?

by R<> » Thu, 02 Sep 2004 16:17:01

Hi

I am looking for sim which realy requires using wheel - I mean, using joy,
pad or keyboard is much less effective then using wheel.
Does somethink like that exists on PC platform now or is expected in near
future ?

All the good sims are best played with a wheel

And get a real wheel.

Just because it is made in low quantities, overpriced and makes you feel
special it doesn't mean it is a "real" wheel.

Maybe other people define "real" as having force feedback...

Please read with understanding - I wrote "effective" and I mean: you can
drive faster with wheel than using pad or keyboard.
In most (if not all)  titles situation is completly different.

The only driving games I remember that were better with the keyboard was the
Need for Speed series. Most of the others are better with a wheel.

There are folks who can easily run fast laps with joypads.  Now does
that mean the SIM is at fault?   No..it means those people have gifted
thumbs.  lol....
The automatic assumption that a wheel is faster than a joypad is
erroneous, but the assumption that a sim should respond better to a wheel
than to a pad is goofy.  The sim responds to the user's imputs...how we
imput or what we use is irrelevant.
Of course the console type sims often have all or nothing ssteering and
there a pad is about the only way to keep the car ontrack.  But any sim
that uses analog inputs vs the console type should benefit wheel users.
So unless it's a cheap console port, ALL sims 'should' give good
results from using a wheel.

At the "sim" end of PC driving games, the "ALL OF THEM" answer is
pretty much on the money.  If you're using a pad or keyboard, you're
probably also using driving assist modes and might not even know it.
Because of this, your laptimes may increase if you switch to wheel and
drop the aids.  Apples to apples, same game, same assist level (i.e.
none) a wheel/analogue stick and pedal set will ultimately be more
effective.

Besides, using a wheel, pedal and shifter set is a lot more fun that
twiddling your thumbs :D

LOL! I agree. None of them are "real", the FF versions even less so IMO. As
phony as they get in my experiences. If I had an automobile whose steering
apparatus does what typical FF PC input wheels do, I'd take it back and
demand it be fixed before it got me killed. BTW, I do use a TSW online.

Whether you appreciate the attempt to simulate real world steering feedback
in todays wheels, any wheel without FF cannot simulate anything.  Bottom
line, without FF no simulation of the real world steering feedback can be
accomplished.

lol, I dont know about Simracer but I've been playing computer sims since
Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge from the early 90s. I bought my first mass
produced wheel in 1996 and went through five Thrustmaster non-force feedback
wheels followed by two Logitech force feedback wheels. I got my TSW2 in June
2001. Wow. What a difference. Many more times better than the wheels I had
before. The quality of that wheel over the others was just a night and day's
difference. For years I knew about the TSW wheel but thought it just wasn't
worth it. Now, I wished that I had gotten it years before that instead of
spending over $600 in wheels, I could have been done buying wheels. I went
to the computer store in the middle of last year when everyone on here
seemed to be raving about how much better the force feedback wheels are now
than they were before and I picked up a Logitech Momo Force wheel. LOL. If
that's the kind of wheel these people kid themselves into thinking is the
equivalent of a TSW2, then they havent driven with a TSW2, at least not more
than on one type of sim. Suffice it to say, I returned the MOMO ...

Fair enough  :P

I been around a while too, but my BENC was on the Amiga...  LOL

everyone of my buds have sold thier logi wheels (of course we all bought
TM's 1st long ago, in fact I still have the t2 for sentimental reasons...)

They never seemed to get the logi right, my buds that is.  some had the
momo, some had earlier ones.  see at 1st it seemed good.  then one guy got
the MS FF, we all laughed about the "tiny wheel" and all that, but dang in
6months we all had one fast.

so I never had FF of anything but, I was the computer geek of the bunch.
when the 1st guy got the MS FF, plus I asked Greggor Hutu back when, what he
used and liked, well I was instantly sold.  I have 2 now since they are
scarce, figured the kid, no more than he even used the pc could "use" the
spare, LOL
