NR2003: missing qualifying times

by Peter Ive » Fri, 09 Apr 2004 08:42:45

Hi all,

Using the patched version of NR2003, has anyone else here noticed that
on some occasions your 2nd qualifying lap isn't recorded for posterity?
Just did a Texas run and I noticed that the 2nd lap didn't show up on
the F2 screen after I crossed the S/F line, despite it being quicker
than the first qualy lap.

I had already been slightly suspicious that NR2003 was overlooking some
of my qualy laps so I checked once I was back at the main race screen.
The 2nd lap DID SHOW as being there when compared against all other
drivers, so I was on poll, but when I checked for my own INDIVIDUAL laps
it only showed the first lap as being listed.

No problem I thought and merrily had the race.  Afterwards, however, I
then checked my lap records page, only to find that, despite being
quicker than anything else I had done previously, there had been no
update to my qualy lap record for that track.

Now, like I say, I've been a little suspicious that this was happening
without having any solid evidence.  I have now been able to see that
there is indeed a problem.  This was done as a 'first attempt'.  I had
not need to restart qualifying at all.

Sorry to be the first to follow-up on my o/p, but the same thing's just
happened at Martinsville.  2nd lap gave me poll, but was not stored as
new PB for qualifying.

How are you exiting the qualifying?   Do you hit escape and exit that
way or wait for the sim to pull you off the track?

Wait for sim to pull me off.  Normally its only a few seconds after I've
crossed the S/F line after qual lap 2.

Oh well, guess I must be the only one who's having this problem. It's
not a major pain, so I'll live with it.

I wouldn't know - my 2nd lap always seems to be *slower* than my first...

Happens here too.   I get placed properly though, so it's not a huge
concern.  Plus, my top lap times are rarely on a qualifying run, and on
NASCAR Rank, I only look at the overall times.

Thought it couldn't JUST be me.  :)  Doesn't happen all the time either.
Just sporadically.  Last 2 qualy runs were fine.  Wonder if it is only
peculiar to certain tracks?

I just did some TPTCC laps at Dave Noonan's Road Atlanta...My 2nd Q lap
was my faster time, but it did not show on the title screens for my
personal best.  However, the faster time was recorded properly in the
qualifying standings so I started in the correct position in the field.
This was a GPL converted track, so I guess we need to verify if this
behaivor affects the default Nextel tracks or just 3rd party efforts.

(can somebody explain the proper use of affect and effect...I have NO CLUE
which one to use any more.)<mush in the ol brainpan I guess>

Well I only have the original tracks.  No add-on tracks as yet.

You look for effects.  When you mess with something your affect it.  :)

I suggest you change the lap callout to mph instead of time. Most
people do that anyway, and I have never had "missing" qualifying times
with MPH callouts. Maybe it's just some flukey thing related to the
type of callout? Just a suggestion...

Interesting...   Must admit, I do have lap callouts set to time.  That's
how I like it.  May give it a try, just to test.

I would think that most 'roadies' have it set for time, as that's what they're
used to.  I know that I have it set that way, as do several others in my
leagues.
Although like I said earlier my second lap is always slower, so I can't tell if
it would work anyway.

That seems odd. I can't think of a reason (apart from possibly poor
driving) that your second lap would be slower - it takes a good 1-1/2
to 2 laps to get the car up to maximum speed. Usually this happens in
the straightaway on the second qualifying lap.

Most of my qualifying runs, the second lap is at least 1 mph faster
than the first lap.

Eldred is mainly a road course racer Gil.  So the posibility of driver
mistakes increase with each lap. :)  At least that is the way it is with
me, the more laps I make, the more mistakes creep in.  I 'think' that cold
tires in Nascar 2k3 are not a slipperly as unheated tires in real world
series.  I've seen CART races where Rabbits are passed by turtles just
because the rabbit is fresh out of the pits on cold tires and even the
slowest (yes YOU Jeff Boss) can pass some of the fastest.
I'm not saying Nr2k3 doesn't portray cold tires, just they don't seem to
be as extreme as some real world situations.
