N2 & win95

by Gary Kendal » Tue, 04 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I just tried to run N2 in Win 95 for about the fifth time, and all of a
sudden it will not work. It goes into the start with the SEIRRA sign and
then the Papyrus sign but then kicks me back to the Win95 screen. Anyone
have any ideas what is wrong? I have totally uninstalled the program and
then reinstalled it, but still the same thing. I thought maybe it was a
conflict with SC2000 I just installed, but I uninstalled SC2000 and
still the same thing. I am BAFFELED. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

BTW..I do not want to run in MS DOS mode right now anyhow, and I am
running a PC 486 120 MHZ w/24 MB Ram and Window 95. I can be reached at

Actually, it doesn't appear that you can...
For you (or your provider's) information: (Tues, approx 10:45 AM EST)
Pinging ccaonline.com [206.25.107.2] with 32 bytes of data:

Anyway, here's what I tried to send you via e-mail:
One thing to try would be to just run the executable (NASCAR2.EXE)
instead of the batch file (N2.BAT). The batch file runs smackply (the
intro movie player) and it sounds like you're crashing in the movie...

Other than that, perhaps SC2000 changed something in your system (lord
knows what...) and "uninstall" didn't perfectly restore your system to
its previous state. (Actually, now that I think about it, if avoiding
smackply "fixes" the problem, then SC2000 probably updated some CD, or
Quick-time type DLL...)

Other than that, I have no idea... :-(

Hi Jim;
I saw this post and found that I had a similar question, thought you
could help me with it. I find that I cannot run N2 from within Win95
consistently. Especially if I have Kali95 running. If I run N2 first,
its OK. If I exit N2, then start it again, I get a not enough
conventional memory error. Almost seems like it is not letting go of
the memory it had. If I run Kali95 first, I get the same error. My
system is a P133 with 32mg of ram. Based on the specs with the game, I
shouldn't have any problem. But I seem bottlenecked somewhere, or my
resources are not being managed correctly. Can you elaborate on what
resources N2 is actually looking for? Can you also tell me if there
are ways to tweak my Properties to maximize the resources available to
it? Lastly, their someway I can check to find out if some other
program is leeching resources from my system?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated,

Your system should happilly run N2. (I have a development system on my
desk that's a P5-90 with 32MB, and I can run N2 from a DOS Box pretty
much all day long (multiple launches with a little debugging/coding in
between)...)

I can imagine that smackply could be leaking memory, something else in
your system could be slowly leaking, (or just a bad, slowly allocating
little chunks of memory right in the "middle" of the memory map.)

N2 doesn't need much at all in the way of environment space; just set
everything to "auto", and it should be fine.

(Note: when debugging N2, I'd always start the DOS box and manually
type NASCAR2 to run the executable. I don't know much about launching
it from an icon, and OF COURSE, it should be the same, but I have no
idea what Win95 is doing behind the scenes...)

Thats what happens when you try to play the rendition version(and your
computer can't handle it for some reason. I have a 133, 32mb ram, Matrox
card, system is 1 year old and thats what happens to me.) . Make sure you
start the regular version, maybe that will help
