Papyrus Design Group, a division of Sierra On-Line, recently extended
its licensing agreement with CART (Championship Auto
Racing Teams). Having secured the right to use the CART name and
logos through the year 2003, Papyrus will develop a new
CART sim (so far unnamed), scheduled for release in spring 1999.

Besides the recently released CART Racing (originally titled IndyCar
Racing II), Papyrus has produced the NASCAR series and
is currently at work on NASCAR Racing 3 and Grand Prix Legends.

The current CART Racing covers the same ground as the 1995 CART World
Series Championship, using the same courses (in
locales such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Japan), cars,
drivers (such as Al Unser Jr., Bobby Rahal, and Paul
Tracy), sponsors, and even billboards. The cars resemble actual CART
racers, which have 850-horsepower engines and can
attain speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. "

Maybe Microsoft will get CPR into the market through their current
"ethical" business practice -- witness Microsoft Incontinent Exploder --
of forcing it upon PC makers by "integrating" it into Windoze
99.999999933333221* , then claiming that you can't uninstall it without
"making Windoze inoperable" -- the same wool they've recently attempted
to pull over the DOJ's eyes.

Then, of course, they could "integrate" an "essential Windoze code" that
has the coincidental side benefit of permanently disabling the core code
of Papyrus "CART 1999"...but MS wouldn't do *that*, would they?

 Windows 95: n.
32-bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an
8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor,
written by a 2-bit company, that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

As CPR is coughing and spluttering out on the track, the test engine
over in the Papyrus garage screams to life with a glorious high pitched
sound. The engineers over in the MS/Tri pit look over in the direction
of this sound with a look of horror and amazement as to what is
happening! Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehe.

My guess is that it will be called "CART Legends" <G>

I guess you can laugh.  In reality, competition benefits us as sim fans.
Papyrus won't be able to skimp on things like telemetry, curbs, updated tracks,
etc....I'd love nothing more than to see Papyrus and MS stealing and improving
on each others' best efforts!

Not for a game ... besides, even without the competition, they managed to find
holes/bugs in WHQL certified display drivers!  I would think they'll be busy
enough without worrying about competition right now.  Besides, its still a few
years off.

Well, if it's anything like ICR2 the sound won't be too glorious -
that's the one (and only) important area where CPR has ICR2 "soundly"
<cough> beaten.

Still, this has to be the best news I've heard about sims for ages,
and looking forward to CART cars and tracks with GPL physics detail.
What odds on a "CROS" for multiplayer on-line open-wheel racing?
Papyrus, if you're not already working on it or considering it, then I
hope you will be able to at least look into this. If a survey says
there is no market then there's nothing to be said, but considering
the numbers interested in racing F1RS, CPR, GP2 and ICR2 in leagues
all over CompuServe and the 'net, that could be precisely the catalyst
required. Even on top of the monthly TEN subs, it wouldn't do any harm
to the sales of the new product either.

<The product's been announced for about 3 picoseconds and the
suggestions and heartfelt entreaties are flying already!>

Cheers!

What? Brazil and Japan in CART Racing? Brazil and Japan in 1995?

Am I confused, or has the person who wrote that been more confused than I am
right now? Is it time for me to upgrade my ICR2 to CART Racing?

I agree John.  Even though I'm a Nascar guy by life, I'm happy to see
Papyrus get back in the ring and do a CART sim again with the new physics.

Still question the online play though.  If I am correct, you are overseas
from the US so I don't know if you ever got to race Nascar on TEN or
Hawaii.  It is pretty hard as it is right now to get a much sturdier stock
car around in one piece with 20 other half-crazed humans.  I can't imagine
the carnage in trying to race open-wheeled cars online with that many
people.  :>

With the added speed and responsiveness of the cars, not to mention
the inherent difficulties of road course, I agree that it is a
somewhat different proposition than NASCAR! However, I have played on
both NROS and Hawaii (we European sim-fans are dedicated!) as well as
racing CPR on the Zone and F1RS over Kali, and the principles are no
different. You learn who you can and cannot trust to race closely
with, and in addition the added responsiveness of the cars means you
can get out of trouble more easily.

I still worry about what the carnage would look like as thirty
win-hungry lunatics went streaming down to that first chicane at
Portland - the track is wide but it ain't _that_ wide! Lucky we don't
have to pay to fix these cars ourselves!

As the film says, "Build it, and they shall come". If a CROS is put in
place, I'm quitting my job :)

Cheers!

If Papy just keep all the features they have in ICR2 (pretty sure
they would) and just improve the physics/AI and graphics (I'm sure they
will do these things) then I will be ecstatic. Now that I come to think
of it, it is very impressive that Papy is a dedicated sim racing company
- and the results of such are evident. Now all we need is for MS to stop
kidding itself it knows how to make games and see if they can just
perfect Windows and Direct X :)
