Which soundcard should I buy to play GPL in Windows XP
without this terrible scratchy sound?!?

It snot the soundcards themselves its the drivers.  IIRC the soundblaster
cards have all been fixed by new driver releases

They're much better but not compleltely fixed.  Sometimes when you
smack something, you go back to that muffled sound and have to start
over from the pits to fix it.

But at least I can play the game again, so I'm grateful...

Reduce 'Hardware Acceleration' in sound properties, worked for me.
