I installed Windows XP and everything seemed fine. Now for some reason when
I try to join a race via IP  I get network error 10054. I got this error in
VROC too right after I joined a previous race. What could the problem be?

I read somewhere that XP has a built in Firewall.  That'd be my first guess.

Could be the problem.  I never had a problem with GPL and XP, but I didn't
use their firewall.  As far as XP goes, it's much like ME.  You need to turn
off the extra services to get it running smoothly with games.

besides System Restore being turned off? what else needs to be done with ME?
  Thanks

System restore is the biggy.  The thing doesn't work anyways.  Makes you
wonder why Microsoft included it in XP as well.

Well, I haven't tried GPL multiplayer under Windows XP but Sports Car
GT multiplayer works fine, just like it did under Windows 98 SE. So
I'm not sure about the firewall idea. However, from what I've seen
SCGT uses DirectX ports and GPL uses its own (no?)

I haven't changed any settings and have GPL (Single Player), Sports
Car GT (XP actually fixed a problem), MechWarrior4, etc etc all work
fine.

Do a web search for 'system restore remover pro', this will permenantly
remove system restore, plus it will let you remove loads of other ***from
ME, like PC Health and Media Player 7.

Then have a read of Legends Centrals ME Setup guide here -

If this is all necessary, why up(down)grade to ME or XP in the first
place?

I don't understand the attraction to XP at all, given the reviews on
the NET. Upgrade for a 30-40% resource drain...???

I'm sorry, but for games WinMe is crap.  Try out XP and you'll notice the
difference.  As far as I can see, anyone who stays with ME or Win98 after
running XP is out of his mind.  Win XP is so much better for general
computer crunching AND for games, that it is unbelievable.  Of course, I
have a Pentium 4, which I kind of figure makes a difference.  :)

I went back to Me from XP specifically for games.  I didn't lose much with
XP, a few frames and the color is lousy with GPL and D3D.  The deciding
factor is that I can't use my PDPI card with XP.  There's nothing wrong with
Me if you know what you're doing with a computer.

Win ME works fine for all my games, better than Win 2000.
I haven't tried Win XP and have no intention of doing so if they require re
registering it whenever I change my hardware.

By the way, Win ME runs fine on an Athlon 750 and Celeron 633, so I have no
need for a costly P4 <G>

yep, that's the kicker to the whole thing - this ridiculous
re-registering idiocy.

This will almost certainly push me to Linux on my next machine / major
