Windows XP and GPL

by Andrew Hollo » Sat, 17 Nov 2001 04:22:00

Hello,

I'm sure you've all heard this before, but my brother has a friend with a
Windows XP based computer, and he cannot get GPL to run at all. What happens
is that it shows the screen with the Brabham on it, then it immediately
crashes to the desktop. It does this with and without the 1.2 patch applies
and it is in software rendering mode, though it does it with the D3D patch
also.

The system is an Athlon 1.4MHz with a GeForce 2 MX400. I'm not sure what
sound card is installed. Other games seem to work fine, but not GPL.

If anyone can shed some light on what is happening, why, and more
importantly how to solve it, we'd have one more GPL'er to race against!

Thanks in advance,

Andrew.

This may or may not be of help to you but here goes.  I was also unable to
get GPL to run on XP.  My solution was to install GPL on a FAT formatted
partition.  Now it works.  It's utterly illogical, but it works.  I tried
formatting the same partition as NTFS and FAT, resizing the partition,
moving the partition, etc.  The only thing that worked for me is to have GPL
installed on a FAT partition.

All that being said, you could be having a video problem.

I think there is a theory going around that GPL doesn't seem to want to run
on an NTFS partition if its also the system/boot partition.  So plan your
install accordingly

I am running GPL on Windows XP with a NTFS partition and it runs great. I
have a geforce 3 (22.80 drivers) and a althon xp 1700+. I will say that for
some reason I could not copy the old directory of GPL on my other hard drive
and get it to work. I think you have some other problem. Lots of people are
running XP with no problems. It might be a video driver problem as already
stated. The drivers may not like GPL or may not like GPL with Windows XP.

have, btw

I'm also running GPL on XP on an NTFS partition, and I just copied the whole
directory from another P.C. The XP box has a Voodoo 3 card and I can only get it
to run in D3D (not Glide). I did have to edit the app.ini file the first time I
tried to run it as it tried to start in Glide then crashed. Maybe you could look
to see what rasterizer is selected in the app.ini file and change it to the
software one to start with.
                 Hope this helps...

I haven't isntalled GPL yet, but I will soon and have converted  to NTFS so
this info will come in handy. So as long as I install to a partition besides
the same one as the system files are on I should be fine, right?

You could try some of the other voodoo drivers floating around, get em here:
http://www.voodoofiles.com/type.asp?cat_id=0
I installed the the WorLord drivers for my V5500 and now have glide working
in GPL
Perhaps try the Hujer Hoe Voodoo 3/4/5 Win XPdriver, havn't tried it myself.

Congrats, you're the first I've heard that can run GPL in glide on XP. I
have the WorLord drivers installed and still get a hard crash with them
although I get through the setups screens ok <others I've tried caused a
lockup after 3dfx splash screen> upon entering the track it locks up. What
refresh rate are you using?

Hello again,

Thanks all for your help, it's been very useful to at least have a vague
idea what the problem might be. I'll forward all the information to my
brother so he can try it all out.

One more question, I don't seem to be able to see this thread in my news
reader (Outlook Express), but I can search the group and see all your
replies. This is very strange, so does anyone know what is happening here
and how I can get to see the thread in the tree view?

Thank you all again,

Andrew.

Err no idea what the refresh rate is - probabaly 75hz I'm running in
1024x768 using the Smiley glide patch, haven't run it much yet so I don't
know how stable it is, perhaps I've just been lucky so far?

I had been running in D3D but had problems with it recognising the gear
shifts on my wingman formula force for some reason.

I don't recall seeing this in anyother reply, but with the 1.4GHz+ Athlon
chips I think that you'll need to run the "fastCPU" fix, available at any
good GPL site and www.papy.com I think.

Good luck!

I got it working with the wrapper, thanks. I had installed GPL on XP then
transferred everything from my 98 partition but hadn't changed the glide.ini
file to use the same resolution -1024x768- as my desktop. I noticed much
better frame rates using the glide wrapper as opposed to d3d, no doubt that
the mirrors are the culprit. Damn glad to get that working.
