MS FF Wheel -- applies brakes too easily

by Morton Chalo » Wed, 18 Jul 2001 12:33:14

I have two PCs:

Windows 98 SE
Microsoft Force Feedback Steering Wheel (USB)
Sidewinder Game Controller software v4.0

This PC's wheel works fine.

Windows 98 SE
Microsoft Force Feedback Steering Wheel (USB)
Sidewinder Game Controller software v3.02

On this PC, I have calibrated the wheel but if I don't touch the
controls, the car goes into reverse. If I accelerate, the brakes are
released and the car moves forward. But if I let up on the
accelerator, the brakes come on again (so inducing skids, etc.).  This
happens in multiple games.

I tried the pedals from PC#2 with the PC#1 wheel and they worked fine.

1) Does anyone have any ideas, please?
2) Does anyone have the install file for Sidewinder Game Controller
v4.0 -- Microsoft seems to only have 3.02 available now.

Thanks

It seems the pedals are in "separate" mode (both have their own axis)
when they should be in "combined" mode (sharing the same axis). At least
in the Sidewinder software ver 4 you can change that, don't know about
3.02.

I noticed the same thing with The Real Car Simulator: Nissan Edition's
demo. First I thought the game was ***when the car understeered like
hell even when just coasting (throttle up) and then started to turn when
I applied a bit of throttle. Turned out the 0% throttle equalled as 100%
brakes for the game...

Don't you have a copy of V4.0 that came with the wheel? You have to
use v4.0 with that wheel. You can only get that version by buying a
controller that needs it, it's not downloadable from anywhere. Better
contact MS and say you lost yours and need a new copy.

Argh!  Thank you for helping me out of my stupidity. After setting up
my first wheel, I had v1.5 and v4.0 so I had assumed that the 1.5
version came from the CD and v4.0 from download but I was wrong!

I did as you said and it works fine.

Thanks again.
