Rendition is really the only good graphics card for Sim Racers.Nearly all
of the sims or ONLY Rendition Ready and if Im correct,SODA Off Road is
going to be Rendition Ready only.If your going to buy a Rendition card,You
may want to wait for the Rendition V2200.Its alot faster than a
Voodoo(Monster 3D)and can run all the old Rendition Ready titles.Just go
to www.rendition.com to find out more.

What, if any, of an improvement can you get with a Rendition Card over a
2mb Mystique Video card?      Or how about a Monster 3D card?

Rendition Cards utilize a different processor to process the video signal
called a "Verite" chipset. I would highly reccomend the Intergraph Intense
3d card available factory direct from Intergraph (www.intergraph.com) -
Look for the Intense 3D link from their homepage. Please keep in mind that
the Intense 3D comes with 4 Megs of Ram, and at $149.00 it's a steal. No,
I don't work for Intergraph, I'm just a happy customer!

Yup! And once the V2200 cards come out, I'm changing my hardware
yet again! :-)

3DFX      > chip, and less expensive.  However, herein lies the difficulty,
while there are
seems to me the hot setup is gonna be the rendition 2200 card feading in to
the canopus 3DFX w/ 6 meg. that way you can have the best of both worlds! i
have seen guys running the 4meg 3DFX with the rendition 1000 right now.
also if the rendition 2200 is gonna be as good as they say then youll see
lots of titles ported to it as well as the 3DFX. take tomb raider for
example.i have the rendition card myself because the only thing i play a
lot of is nascar and nascar2 and am quite happy with it over all.
but if you play lots of different games then i think that the 3DFX card
would be a better choice.

If you can afford it, having the existing rendition card (mine's the
Intergraph version) along with the 3DFX add-on card works just great.
It is expensive but you get the best of both worlds. The 3dfx takes
over in windows-directx-gl modes while the rendition card handles
regular SVGA,VGA and rendition accelerated products (namely ICR2 and
Nascar2). I have not had any conflicts, they get along just fine.

Rendition Cards over Matrox Mystique????

The current Rendition cards offer a significant improvment in 3D over the
Mystique.  Direct3D games will not run much faster, but they will look
substantially better because of the Rendition's support of bi-linear
filtering.  You also will have more Rendition native titles than you will
Mystique native ones.  On the 2D end you'll really not see much of a
difference for SVGA games.  Mode13 VGA (Doom uses this mode) will be
significantly slower, and Windows GUI speed will be a little slower but
still fast enough for most users.  However, I really can't recommend buying
one of these cards as the second generation V2200 based cards are due out
very shortly.  They offer much better all around performance (early reports
say the cards outperform the Voodoo's) and are no more expensive than the
original V1000 cards (though the 8MB versions will be more).  They also add
TV outputs if you're into that kinda thing.

Eric:
Wait till you see the 3D-RAGE IV chipset from ATI. Working there, I've
seen the early versions in action. VERY impressive. Blow the Matrox away
for speed and effects. It will also add a TV output/full motion
VidCap/still VidCap and a growing list of titles.

One question: Will Windows-Based (WIN95 native mode) games require
manufacturer specific support? My knowledge (granted limited as I work
in telecom) would say Direct3D would make it virtually
device-indepandant as it would be up to the OS to determine what
effects/quality would be displayed.

Using the main memory for textures is a GoodThing?.  I meant to be
respoding to a C-NET article in which they said that an AGP card could use
the system's main memory for the frame buffer, which would be bad.  Sorry
for the confusion...

It looks to have good features, but early benchmarks I've seen suggest it's
still not on the same level for 3D as compared to the Voodoo and V2200
cards.  Of course these are earlyu reports, and things may very well change.
Still, unlike the Rendition and Voodoo cards, I highly doubt you'll see any
non-bundled games ported to the ATI card though...

Exactly.  The idea is to use a common API (so far it's either Direct3D or
OpenGL) so that the largest number of cards can be supported.

 My sentiments EXACTLY!!
If Papyrus had never produced "Indianapolis 500" I would have saved a
fortune (but then....would I be as contented? :-))

What is the wiring like?

Two displays?
You manually switch the display from one port to the other?
The boards connect to one another?
The boards connect via the PCI bus?
