GPL TNT2 AAAAAARGH

Ok. I bought my new Celeron 500 with 32 MB tnt2.
Great fun with my 19" and surround sound for N3 and RC2K!
I knew it would give me problems with gpl but is wasn't unpatchable. So I
went for it.
I downloaded the glide patch and the 1.2 patch at the pits and gave it a
try. It sucks! It gave me even less frames per second than with my antique
p200mmx + banshee and the graphics are much worse. It looks all so blurry
and undetailed with all graphic options turned on.
Is it like that? Or is there another solution? Should I put my good old 16
mb Banshee in it?
Please help me out!!!

You need the OpenGL patch and you have to run it in OpenGL mode.

Tim, I'm using a P3 550, TNT2 32meg, non-ultra, at 1024*768, 16bit
color. I get 36 fps at all times except starts offline, and 36 fps at
all times online. As was mentioned, are you using the "Papy OpenGL
Beta2 Patch" ? I have lots of graphics turned off to get those frame
rates. Turn off ALL textures in mirrors, and have cars only in the
mirrors. Set Mirror Refresh in Core.ini to somewhere between 4 and 8.
I also have the arms and car textures off for racing.

I did have the latest patches of everything and I still have problems
running GPL with Viper 770.  It is getting long in tooth for me and I'll
swap it with Voodoo3.

GPL is great product, need improvement in user friendly (no need to go to
xxx.ini files etc...) and add easy-difficulty slider, then it would be
awesome.  They could take GPL engine, add user friendly interface for
setups etc..., that slider and sell as modern F1 sim, then it would be hot
seller!  Upgrade/sell on annual basis for previous season driver/team
lineups.

Try nvidia 3.68 drivers and set buff flip to block transfer and be
happy.

Ok turned down the details so I have 36fps now, but the image still looks
very blurry compared with my p200 16mb banshee. And can't I get any descent
mirrors?? Hard to race at VROC without some good rear vision you know!

I'm running the same setup (Celeron 500 mhz and 32 MB TNT non-ultra).
It runs great!  My only problem is that I suck as a GPL driver.

Look for some other cause with your computer.

Here are copies of two posts from Billy and Slot that solve the TNT mirror
problem. It stops the flashing, and there's no frame rate hit, it's great.

Newsgroups: rec.autos.simulators
Subject: How to fix GPL mirrors with any Nvidia driver

I just got the GPL demo yesterday and after seeing how good it is, I
plan on buying the game.  There was a problem with the cars' mirrors
though, which I've learned has been a long-time issue with the tnt/tnt2
cards.  I searched the internet for a solution and came across a message
here about using the 3.53 reference drivers with the "Use Block
Transfer" setting to fix the problem, which works perfectly.  The only
problem is that those drivers suck hehe.  I wanted to know how to enable
that setting with the 2.08 drivers (the best ones imo), and discovered
that this fix can be applied to any driver version by simply changing
the value of the "FlippingControl" setting in the registry to "0".

Depending on the driver version, this setting can be found in

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\RIVA TNT\OpenGL], or

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NVidia
\OpenGL]

When doing a fresh install, the settings won't appear in the registry
until an opengl game is run once.

Newsgroups: rec.autos.simulators
Subject: Re: How to fix GPL mirrors with any Nvidia driver

You'll probably use the second path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NVid
ia\OpenGL

Keep in mind, that the 0001 could be 0000 or 0002 or whatever, depending on
the number of cards you HAVE or the number of drivers you HAD installed.
When you open the folder, look on the right side of the split screen for
"FlippingControl".  Double click it and a box will open. Type 0 in the box
and close the registry (just hit the x to close the window). It
automatically saves the changes. Generally you don't have to reboot, but you
may have to.

This is weird... this should be in my registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NVid
ia\OpenGL
All I have here is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0001\NVid
ia
Is this normal?

Sorry Tim, I'm not a registry guy, but read the posts again, there are two
different paths where it might be. On my system it was
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\RIVA TNT\OpenGL]

Ooops I'm stupid! Thanks, mirrors work like a charm now. But graphics
overall are still worse. The groove is unclear and it seems like the start
of it at a braking point has moved further up the track. I'm having a lot of
trouble racing because of that the groove. At Monza for example I miss my
turn in point at ascari and miss my braking point totally at Parabolica.
(some people may have noticed that on VROC :)
I'll put some screenshots from my previous and my new system somewhere on
the net. I'll let you know when I've done that.

Most people say that the Nvidia based cards have a clearer/sharper image than
the Voodoo based cards due to different filtering techniques used, so I'm
surprised you find it not as clear. There is even a websites showing side by
side Nvidia versus Voodoo gpl screen shots. Don't know the url. Anybody ?
GPL tends to be a bit dark. I have to turn up my monitor brightness for it.
Could this be what your seeing ?
