N2, Cyrix, Rendition - Still a problem?

by Tony Jo » Wed, 31 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I have a friend with a cyrix p166+ processor who loves running nascar2.  He
would like to have a rendition card.  I remember a while back reading posts
about problems with this combination.  Has this been resolved (with the BGN
pack, patches, etc) or does this combination still not work properly?

Thanks in advance!

Tony,

I got my setup to work with Rendition, but couldn't get rid of problems with
overly sensitive steering and some annoying twitches coming out of turn 4 on
most tracks.  As far as I know it's still a known problem.  I tried every
suggestion/patch I could find, and finally ended up pulling out the Cyrix P166+
and plugged in a Pentium 200, changed one jumper and weeeeeeeeeeeeee!  My
steering problems were solved instantly!  I would guess that the motherboard he
has will upgrade to a Pentium 200 and no better (i.e. will not support MMX).  I
also found that Windows 95 crashes much less now with the Pentium... I'll never
buy another non-Pentium chip again.  100% compatibility is false advertising,
in my opinion.

If your friend decides not to upgrade to a Pentium 200 and he has everything
working with Rendition except sensitive steering... my advice to him is to set
the steering lock lower than normal on every track.  This will compensate,
some, for the sensitive steering problem.

As a recovering Cyrix user, I agree 100%!  If money is an issue, I guess you have
to consider cheaper alternatives, but I strongly recommend Intel to everyone.

Regarding the original post, the only problem I had running N2 with a Cyrix &
Rendition was a twitchy joystick when in DMA mode.  I stuck with non-DMA mode and
it ran quite nice, albeit a bit slow.  I forget exactly which patch is was, but the
problem was addressed quite a while back and I was able to run the DMA version just
fine...with the latest release he should be OK.  That said, I'm sure you're aware
that a 3dfx version of N2 is coming.  When that happens, I'm afraid the last reason
for anyone to own a Rendition card will disappear...
