N2 steering problems with Cyrix 166

by Peter Jone » Wed, 07 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I have many problems controlling the steering in Nascar 2 with the
update patch to rev. 1.3 installed.

My processor is a Cyrix 166 with 32 meg ram, running as Dos window in
W95.

I have tried adjusting the steering ration in car setup , made sure I
have jostick steering ,( not wheel steering), tried arcade mode etc.
still the steering is very twitchy.

Sierra patch update notes mention that they have cleared most Cyrix /
joystick problems but it still seems hard to control to me.

Does anyone have any other suggestions ?

Thanks

What joystick do you have?  I'm running 1.03 as well, and after I upgraded my
joystick, (I now have a Wingman Digital Extreme) I've noticed that the
joystick itself seems to "twitch" for the first few minutes after I get into
the game.  After a couple minutes it settles down and everything is fine.

I've also found that the problem isn't quite as bad if I calibrate it from the
Win95 Joystick control in the Control Panel before entering the game.  (If
you've installed DirectX 5, it's called Game Controllers instead.)  I'm not
sure why, but it seems to reduce or shorten the effect.

The earliest version of N2 (Rendition) definitely had a problem with
joysticks on Cyrix machines, but don't overlook the basics...

The easiest thing to do that clears up twitchy joysticks on a lot of
systems is to UNCHECK "poll with interrupts enabled" in the advanced game
controller options...this works like night and day on at least one of my
systems!  If the problem reappears, take another look and make sure the
box remains unchecked; it occasionally turns itself back on (I think this
happens when you update DX5 or run the dxplay50a update).

This has probably been said a thousand times, but you MUST get a good
game controller (especially with digital joysticks).  This means a CH
Gamecard or a Thrustmaster ACM, period; they're both excellent.  I've
read reports from some N2 vets who did extensive testing with and without
a good game card and apparently they can significantly improve your lap
times.  Obviously, you'll have better control, but something in the
joystick polling (I think) makes the game actually run better.

Regardless, try these two things and I'll bet your problems go away...

Good Luck,
Sean

What type of controller card are you running? Sound-card port
or game card? I had bad luck with twitchiness, then I bought a Thrustmaster
ACM gamecard, and a good bit has been fixed. I also run a Cryix 166 with 64
megs of ram. I run from straight DOS because I don't do Net racing.
