Can I overclock my Cyrix 166+

by Mikel753 » Thu, 06 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I have a Jetboard MB (J-656VXB) with Intel VX chipset.  16 megs of 168 pin
mem.
and 16 of 72 pin(non EDO) 512k PB Cache.  It's fast but of course I want
faster ;)  It is set 2 run 66x2 at 133 mhz.  Would it cause over heating
or any damege to bring it up to 150
or even 166 mhz?

Any help would be appreciated.

A week ago I set my p166+ to 75*2 Mhz (motherboard Asus T2P4), until now
no problems! But to be on the save side, I bought a better cooling
device.

It is NOT recommended but, that doesn't stop people from trying.  Check
out : http://sysdoc.pair.com/overclock.html#Overclocking Step by Step
for a complete reference.

BTW: How did you do the impossible and get 16 megs of SDRAM and 16 megs
of FPM to run at the same time?

Just because it has 168 pins doesn't necessarily mean it's SDRAM.  You
can get EDO DIMMs as well.

Yes it wil run hotter, but how much hotter is anyone's guess.  Do
yourself a favor and get a decent heatsink/fan combo to sit atop the
CPU ang go for it.  Assuming you can keep a chip cool enough, it's
theoredically possible to run it at any speed.

I'm probably dead wrong but I remember hearing that 66mhz x 2  is better
than
60mhz x 3.  Can anyone confirm or deny this?

thanx

Don't run it at 2.5x60 or even 3x50 to achieve 150 MHz, that's
actually slower than your current setup (at least if you want to play
games). The way to go is to increase the clock of the board to 75 or
83 MHz. Be careful, though: Cyrix chips get much hotter under normal
conditions than Intel chips. The author of a very comprehensive site
on overclocking claims that the Cyrix are already "overclocked" by the
manufacturer, i.e. there is less unused potential than in an Intel
chip. You may find all this info under:

http://sysdoc.pair.com/busspeed.html
http://sysdoc.pair.com/75mhzbus.html
http://sysdoc.pair.com/overclock.html

If your board can be set to higher speeds, that might be the way to
go. Good luck!

Um, Eric, I don't think so.  The logic in the chip is designed to run at
a certain speed and that will be the limit.  For instance, at work, we
run our logic designs, and then route them at a certain speed.  The
routing of the chip will ensure that all the connects are the proper
length (ie time delay) that the chip will run.

I would imagine the Intel and competitor chips are all routed at pretty
high speeds to make the upgrades easier.  But I'm also quite sure that
the logic would fall apart (called a race condition) due to routing at
some speed.  What that value is, I have no clue.  Does this make sense??

Perhaps, but in PC Direct France's January edition there is an
interview with Jean-Paul Colin (Intel research director, France) about
overclocking.  The following is part of that interview:

PC Direct: What are the risks for the customer?

Jean-Paul Colin: When the CPU processing speed is increased,
temperature raises too.  Now, each time temperature raises 6.5C, you
double the risk of malfunctions.  All our CPUs are certified to work in
a range of -25C to +80C. And the tests are run by Intel in extreme
conditions of temperature and voltage.

PC Direct: So, it's totally possible for a Pentium to work perfectly at
_any_ speed, if it's correctly cooled?

Jean-Paul Colin: That's right.

I guess I should clarify things because this is all a moot point
anyway.  Severe overclocking is not practical, as it's just not
possible to keep the CPU cool enough.  You'll run into thermal failure
well before you reach the limits of the chip's circuitry.
