For around a thousand dollars, I bought a Cyrix 6x86 166+ chip, 16Mb EDO
RAM, Matrox Millenium 2Mb "W"RAM! (supposedly faster than "V"RAM) and a
Triton VX motherboard with 256k pipeline burst cache.
I can get full SVGA detail in IndyCar2, minus the road detail which is
ugly anyway, and still carry 19 to 30 fps!!
In GP2 I can handle SVGA, minus the sky, smoke and track and carry around
17-25 fps, depending on the track. Granted I don't have the full detail
options in the mirrors, but as long as I can see who's behind me, I'm
happy.
I've been told that the Cyrix chip is only 8% slower than the P200, and'll
easily surpass the speed of the P166!! If you are seriously considering an
upgrade from a DX, or anything, you might want to look into this setup.
I used to envy the drivers for having the chance to drive those bueatiful
machines, but hell, now they can envy me, because they don't get as much
track time as I do!! :D
