The new announcement from the LeMans2k2 mod-making team looks pretty damned
interesting,
the below text is cut from their newsflash in the RaceSimCentral news.

The LeMans team can be found and questioned here:

and their website is here:

-------------------

Its Official NO LEMANS2K2 MOD (Its a good thing please read)
OK not to scare anyone. We are still releasing a MOD. But it will be a
little different than others out there...
I am developing an application (Sportscar Simulated Motorsports MOD
Launcher) that will allow us to provide unlimited "Carsets" each carset will
be a MOD in itself but they can all be combined in unlimited possibilities.

Here's a feature list:
- Auto MOD setup: The app detect if this is the first time you have run and
sets up all of the MOD folders, config.ini file etc...
- Launches all MODs installed: Gives you a dropdown list of all MODs
installed on your system and will launch each one. (NO MORE SHORTCUTS!!!!!)
- Skin Manager: Basically we will be providing multiple Menu Art packs that
can be switched on the fly before laucnhing the game. This is similar to
"SKins" in apps like Media Player or Winamp..
- Options interface: This allows you to enable Headlights (no more Blinking)
set number of opponenets, etc...
- Car Enable/Disable: this will be supported for all mods installed. You
will get a Tree of all cars in the currently selected MOD. I am providing
extra info Carset, CarClass, TeamName, CarName so the interface will be more
readable. Plus you will be able to Disable or enable entire Carsets, Classes
, etc.. with one click...
- Component Installer: This is the best part. I have defined several custom
file formats that will allow us to install components and apply patches
without any hacking, copying, etc..

Supported Components:
.SCS (SSM Carset) This is for multiple car packs. It will include sounds,
cars, drivers, pit crews(Maybe), selection screen art. etc.. It will also
repackage any .MAS files. (No more cluttered folders)
.SCP (SSM Carpack) this is for single car and Upgrade/patches. Will also
rebuild .mas files if nessicary
.SMA (SSM menu art) describe above Menu "Skins"
.SMC (SSM Misc) these are for Movies, Music, etc.. and will contain custom
instructions the MOD launcher will use to install
.STP (SSM Track Packs) this will be complete tracks or upgrades

OK before you comment I know it sounds like Racing Legends, but I actually
started the design before I ever visted there website... I am hoping this
will help avoid all of the install and setup problems with MODs. After we
get everything running smooth I will provide instructions for packaging into
these formats, So that anyone that wants to make there: cars, mods, movies,
whatever availabe.

three words.

NET  CODE

TRACKS

Major kudos to F12002 mod-people - but with netcode seemingly using
yoghurt-pot-and-string network protocol and tracks only marginally more
realistic than Jaques Villeneueves new game - they have little opportunity
to shine and realism has to be compromised to deal with them.

I agree, too bad they couldn't base the mod on NR2002.  Perhaps NR2003 will
have better support for mods since it is the last go for Papy.

I will say this NET CODE is still 2 more words than RL has :)

Yes, I've heard the RL net code and tracks are top notch.  Wait a tick . . .
RL's *theoretical* net code and tracks are top notch.  On paper, RL has this
mod beat and is the best sim (n)ever made. ;0)

I thought I was a bit obsessive about sticking up for RL - but this anti-RL
attitude is way beyond that. I didnt even MENTION it and some prats chip in
with "ooo - RL - oo - doesnt exist - oooo "

Yep Doug you are right, the term "RL Killer" was just a cunning scheme to
get attention ;)
I do have high hopes for the mod these guys are doing, and if you add
Simbins mod to the equation I think F1-2002 is the best simracing buy right
now. 2 fabulous looking and great handling mods on top of a game that is
"ok" unmodded... a good deal in my book :)

My dream is that EA will wake up and smell the coffee some day, involve
these talented teams in the development of an EA equivalent of Racing
Legends. A modular game based on the EA engine, but with much better online
capability.

I know the tracks are a big issue for some people, but I must admit I do not
mind them being inaccurate if they are challenging and FUN. That is a
discussion we'll probably never agree on though ;)

Two problems for me.

1) The piss-poor F12002 tracks.

2) No real LeMans track yet.

I kinda wish that the mod makers would actually wait for nascar
thunder 2003 since it has a vertex damage model and the same
capabilities for modding as f1 2002.  It would mean a longer wait, but
I think a better damage model would be worth it.

If the post is about a modded F1 2002 vs. RL and you say F1 2002 has
inferior net code and tracks you are implying that RL will have superior net
code and tracks.  If not, then you must have been comparing F1 to some other
sim which has no place or purpose in this thread given its very concise
subject line.  You pick: either you suffer from RL blind faith or a reading
comprehension disorder?

BTW, before you get pissy again: I'm joking.  You are so serious in these
threads, why?  Yes, I think you're the resident tight ass.  This is a hobby.
Hobby=fun.  Fun=laughter.  Laughter=good.  Why not unclench the buttocks and
relax a little?  Relaxed buttocks have a remarkable therapeutic effect.  You
can read about it in my new book "Chicken Soup for the Ass" (available soon
at Amazon).

FWIW, I enjoyed the mods for F1 2001.  If the F1 2002 mods are the same or
close I'm happy and can live with it as my PC Sports Car/Le Mans racing
game.  Would I prefer the "dream" game?  Who the hell wouldn't.  I'm just
being realistic and grateful for what we have in the short-term pipeline.

I have been a West supporter for years - just like you.  Only difference is
my "faith" threshold is lower (or higher depending on the direction of the
scale).  I lost faith after seeing their***-brained idea for raising
capital (teddy bears anyone?).  I realized these good intentioned guys have
little business sense and will probably never get this wonderful concept
completed.  It was clear to me that they need the $ from merchandise sales.
They only backed off after too many folks thought the same (those of us
unaffected by acute RL blindness).

Keep *your* the faith, just don't bust my balls for losing mine.  I
certainly hope you're right.

PS-I read "OH FOR ***S SAKE" with Fat Bastard's Scottish accent.  Did you
type it with that in mind? ;0)

As far as I remember the LeMans track is in development ??
... and I know the realism police will haunt me, but I don't mind inaccurate
tracks as long as they are fun and/or challenging and feel realistic.
