People *might* have been clamoring by the thousands for an online shop. I do
not know. What I do know is that when the Great Teddy Bear Debacle began,
the West's posted an update entitled "Online Shop Coming Soon" saying that
they needed to raise some money to continue the development of Racing
Legends. They said the project could not continue being funded entirely by
themselves.
The reason you give for the online shop is taken directly from the "Online
Shop Coming Soon 2" update on their website, which was IMHO, some of the
most vigorous backpedaling in recorded history.
"We only put up a shop cause people wanted it so bad!! Never mind about
all that money nonsense! We don't really *need* it! Just thought it would be
nice, that's all.. new computers... and maybe a person or two to help out...
but we don't *need* it to continue, Honest!!" (I'm paraphrasing here)
I believe they want to make a racing sim. They have some really cool
looking renders up on their website. It's easy to let one's self fantasize
about zooming around RL's stunningly realistic tracks in racing machine
modeled right down to the completely functional tire valve stem. That is the
allure of RL that turns so many hobbyists into foaming at the mouth
lunatics.
Whether they have the technical skills to build RL I do not know, but I know
it won't -- make that CAN'T -- be the racing nirvana it has been painted to
be. It will be, if anything at all, a game when all is said and done. It may
absolutely suck. It may lock up on your computer. You may be sitting there
for months with an unplayable game waiting on a patch. On the other hand it
may not. Who knows?
One brother may be an excellent computer artist, the other may be a
whiz-bang programmer, but I believe they know about as much about running a
software development company as I know about building a pyramid.
What amuses me about this whole thing is the people who read what the West's
write, whether it be in a forum, website update, or FAQ, and blindly accept
every word as if it were brought down from the mountain by Moses himself.
To say that the demand for a shop rather than a need for funds led to that
idiotic teddy bear staring at me from the RL web page is much more than
naive. It's just plain damned silly.
