F1 2K TSW problems

by Eldre » Fri, 21 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Ok, I give up.  I couldn't find a decent answer in the 100's of messages on
deja...  I have a TSW2mod w/ split-axis setting.  I finally got F12K from Ebay.
I've installed the program, and it doesn't seem to see my wheel and pedals.  I
can use the default config if I set the pedals back to single axis, but if I
change anything, it will never see it.  I've already had to delete my player
twice. :(    I found the 'unsupported options' screen, and changed the setting
to split-axis.  No good.  I even tried holding the pedals down while starting
the game.  I couldn't find ANY calibration screen, and I haven't been able to
get this program to work satisfactorily.  All of my other games work
great...and the wheel/pedals calibrate just FINE in the control panel  I'm
going to assume that I just have some settings incorrect before I call it a
piece of crap...  It reminds me a lot of the F1 game by Psygnosis - both look
and feel.

I also need suggestions on display options.  I'm running a K63/400 with 128K
ram and a V3 3000.  The standard graphics settings cause frame hits with a full
field.  What have people had success changing options to with this type of
system?
Can anyone help me out?  Thanks.

p.s. yes, I *do* have the 1.09 patch.  I was hoping that would solve my
problems...<sigh>

This from the f1_2000_faq.txt at bhmotorsports.com:
I cannot configure my steering wheel, joystick or gamepad to go left or right
in
the Controls Menu. What can I do?

Start the game and choose either Test Day, Quick Race, Grand Prix or
Championship mode from the F1 2000 Main Menu. Once a team, driver and track
have been selected enter the game by clicking on the drive icon in the Session
Status Display. Once the car is on track press Escape and then Return on the
keyboard to go back into the Session Status Display. From here click back on
the icon for Main Menu and then click the
Controls icon to access the Controls Menu. You will now be able to configure
the left
and right axis on your steering wheel, joystick, gamepad successfully.

There is a lot of talk about this in r.a.c.  Some of the biggies:
Turn off mirrors.
Fewer AI opponents.
Reduce texture quality.

Geez, so many hoops to jump through with *production*(not Beta) software???
Now I see why so many people were pissed off...  Although, I think I did that
the first time accidentally.  I went to the track(not even THINKING about
calibrating), and none of the controls worked, so I had to backtrack...

Thanks, Tom.  I'll try your suggestions when I get home.

What joystick ID# is your TWS on in the control panel joystick
applet?

It's set for ID#1.

I discovered that not only did I have to go 'to the track' (as Tom suggested)
before I could configure the pedals, I also had to hold down the brake pedal.
In other words, press the pedal, hold it down, select Test Day, click to go to
the track.  Once the car was actually on the track, I could release the pedal.
Even after doing the config, I have to follow that procedure every time I do a
session.  Once I'm there, it works for the rest of that session.  If I exit to
change tracks, or do a Gran Prix, or different race, etc - I have to hold down
the pedal until I get to the track the first time...  If I jump into a race,
and forget to do it, I'm screwed.
Unbelievable...poor programming...
