NASCAR Online - problems connecting

Well, last night (Wed Apr 24 1996) I attempted to try out the
multiplayer NASCAR Racing. I installed hawaii.exe, went through the
eterm.bat routine, and finally got to "Dial Network."

The modem dials out long distance :( and I get the typical CONNECT
xxxxx message. The dbiterm program comes up, then a short pause, and
then I get a "cannot connect" popup window. The terminal then says
"connecting...," but after a short pause I get "cannot connect" again
and the modem drops the connection.

I've tried 10 or so times, each time changing settings (modem
parameters, ATZ, AT&F, etc.), but I always got the above
behavior. Can anyone offer helpful advice? Have they stopped
accepting new users?

I tried last night also to logon to the service and it took me perhaps
six or seven tries before it let me in.  Common symptoms were the
'cannot connect' variety.  Once you get in though.......  wow!  Had to
literally drag myself away....  Can't wait for local access numbers!!

I had same problem but after I changed my username
from 9 to 8 charactors Ive had no problems since.  So if you picked a
long username shorten it up.

MP - I think it was just a coincidence that you got in with an 8 character
long user ID but not with a 9 character long one.  There were some problems
on the service last night which caused one of the servers to drop some
connections - we've been running at much higher loads for longer periods of
time now that we are in open beta, so the warp drive engines need a bit of
burn in time, as you can imagine.  I think we solved the particular problem
people were having last night, but some other problems are likely to get
shaken out with Hawaii running near capacity for extended hours (as well as
some likely busy signals, since we've only got 128 lines in to the service
at this point!), so bear with us if you can't get though, and feel free to
contact the hawaii help contacts if you're stuck or if you think you found
a bug which should be brought to our attention.  See you racin...

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but I thought my modem was screwed up or
NASCAR wasn't recognizing for 2 days.  Nothing I tried worked.  It turned out that when you
choose Dial Network from the menu, it says that you are already connect, Resume (Yes, No).
Well, since I knew the phone hadn't dialed beacuse I didn't hear anything and it certainly
didn't take long enough for it to connect, I chose Yes.  Everytime, it wouldn't do anything.
Just for kicks, I chose No once. Whala, it began dialing.  The word resume is very misleading
there and it caused me 2 days of frustration.  I hopes this helps someone.

You want to make sure you don't have DIP switches and/or your &C modem setting
set to force Carrier Detect (CD) on (&C0).  CD is typically used to to indicate
to software that the modem is connected to another.

You want to set the DIP switch so that CD setting is operating in Normal mode
(&C1).
