Videocard Recommendation?

by BRH » Thu, 01 Mar 2001 11:21:23

I'm considering replacing my ATI All-in-Wonder Pro plus 2 Voodoo2's
(SLI) with a Voodoo5 card and the VoodooTV add-on card, and have a
number of questions.

Obviously, the reason for the upgrade is to improve the graphics in
racing sims (mainly GPL, N4, F1CS, etc), but I also want to retain the
capability of receiving Cable TV on my PC.  So, my questions are:

1.  Are there any issues with setting up the Voodoo5 (especially in
conjunction with a VoodooTV card) when it comes to GPL, N4, etc?
2.  How much of an increase in performance can I expect with upgrading
the videocard(s)?  (My system is a Celeron 566, o/ced to 850, under
Windows 95 OSR2).

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.  Thanks.

You are absoluetly crazy for thinking of buying a 3DFX product now....

Get a Geforece 2 Pro

3DFX is DEAD so you will probably not see anymore updates and have problems
with any type of support. For the Money I would definantly look into the
GeForce 2 Pro (a bit pricey) or the ATI 64MB Radeon which has many of the
features you mentioned for less than a GeForce 2Pro.

Nothing is optimized for GLIDE anymore and even GPL doesn't need it so there
is no reason to stick with a dead brand. Also the GeForce 3 is a few weeks
around the corner with rave hype about it -- but also a $599 price tag...if
nothing else its release should send all other prices down some more.

Look around some hardware sites and you should find some good reviews of
both. Here is a good place to start:

I've seen the Voodoo 5 5500 for as low as $115, new. At that  price it's a
bargain! It'll run the games you mentioned just fine. You should see a
significant frame rate boost over what you've been running. The ATI TV
Wonder gets better reiviews and does more than the Voodoo TV card. ATI is
still king here. I'm testing one now with a V5500 and have no problems.
There's  probably still a rebate on them at Best Buy, so it'll end up
costing about $40. Don't worry about V5500 support. If it stops it doesn't
matter, you don't need any. The current drivers are stable. So, if you want
hassle free ***, especially driving sims, the 5500 is a good choice right
now, and cheap. Next time you upgrade your computer to a 1.5Ghz or
something, you can consider an nVidia GeForce3.
At some  point you may want to consider Win98, though.

For N4 the GeForce is fantastic.  For GPL, while the frame rate is
excellent, the graphics quality with the GeForce are rather bland.  I
suspect the V5 is the best video card on earth for GPL, while the GeForce is
better for N4.  Bummer.

Videocard Recommendation?

Thanks for the tip on the ATI TV Wonder.  One question about it -- Do the
drivers support VCR-like functionality?  That is, can you record a program to
your hard drive?

Also, regarding the Voodoo5 5500 -- Where did you see it for $115?

Thanks.

I wouldn't say the GF is fantastic.  I have a GF2GTS in a P3-700 with 256meg
and it's only MARGINALLY better than the TNT2 it replaced.

Yes, you can record with the card. Check out the ATI web site for more info
and www.killerapp.com  for reviews. There is also a slightly more expensive
model with stereo  surround.
Check www.pricewatch.com for the best V5500 prices.
