videocard update question (for GPL)

by Patrick Dogg » Fri, 14 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I still have a voodoo1 and can run GPL at about 30fps (640x480). I do own a
Asus TNT2 and but I don't get frame rates above 20 fps using this card
(including the annoying flickering)

My question is should I upgrade and buy a Voodoo3 just to get the 6fps extra
or don't 6fps make much difference in the drivability of the game. I know I
probably can get max fps at higher resolutions with the voodoo3, but I will
only upgrade if it improves the drivabilty of GPL.

You may or may not notice the last 6 fps...but there are several other
factors to consider.  what cpu are you running, GPL is more CPU
intensive than video resolution.   You 'may' find with a V3 3000 that
running at 1024x780 isn't much different than 800x600(in the frame rate
dept).
The biggest factor about getting 36fps is online stability.  If you
and everyone else is at or very near to 36, then the chances of a clean
warp free race with no disconects go way up.
  And finally...:)
V3 3000 are comming down in price now as the pipeline gets ready for
V4 and V5 voodoo cards.  Waiting about another 3 months "may" prove VERY
worthwhile.

For me, those last few fps made all the difference in GPL, online and
offline. If you like GPL, you'll never be sorry about that V3, supposing
your CPU is up to it.

????

I have a Asus TNT1 and a Pentium 2 at 466Mhz and I get 37fps in 1024x768 all
the time, except for the start. I have all detail on, but with detail bias
rather low (whats the difference anyway) and I reduced the mirror refresh to
every 4 frames.
I find GPL VERY PLAYABLE this way.

U must have something wrong with your TNT2.

if you have a reasonably fast pc then a v3 is worth getting as you can run
at higher res with less jaggies with more consistent frame rate.

It would be nice to know what cpu you have. Anyway, the TNT2 will run better
(no flicker) on GPL with the latest 3.53 drivers. Unfortunately, most of the
other games you play will probably run worse. A TNT2 is even more processor
dependant than the Voodoo 3 and also requires a more stable voltage than
Nvidia. Some sick GeForce cards have been cured by switching to a 300 watt
power supply. If you don't have at least a 200Mhz (intel standards)
computer, don't bother changing your Voodoo card.
The good news is that the new Voodoo 4s and 5s will be less processor
dependant. If you've got an extra hundred bucks to spend, get a V3000,
otherwise you might want to wait 4 months for the new cards.

Now I've got a question for you guys. When I have my V 3000 installed I get
better cpu scores in Wintune98 than when I have my TNT2U installed. Only
about 3.5%, but its there all the time. Question: Is it the cards or the
drivers making the difference? I don't want to reinstall the TNT and change
drivers to check it out (too lazy, and GPL is waiting).

Or, if you have a slower PC, (350 or less), a Voodoo2 will
do nicely! And they are dirt cheap right now too!
