Best CPU/Videocard combination for GP2?

by CaptGrim » Mon, 05 Jan 1998 04:00:00

It's time to upgrade my existing P166/STB Velocity 3d system and I was
wondering if there are comparisons out there which suggest the optimum
configuration for GP2.  I remember seeing one once on Pieter's GP2 page but it
seems to have vanihed.   GP2 is the only sim that I play (as F1RS seems
unavailable in California) and I'd love to see it closer to its full potential.

Right now I'm leaning to a PII-300mhz w/Intel chipset (440lx with AGP), a Viper
AGP graphics card, and a Ultra DMA harddrive.  Am I headed in the right
direction or about to make an expensive mistake?

I need advice or counsel from you GP2 aces out there that have already done
this research.

Thanks.
Grimes

Sounds good to me. Though I must confess I don't know a hell of a
lot about the 2d performance of AGP cards. Pretty good I guess. Though
it seems to me that as far as PCI goes at the moment that the best way
to optimise 2D and 3D performance is a seperate card for each.

Grimes,
GP2 is a real processor hog, you can't go wrong with a P2/300. make
sure you get the 440lx core logic chipset. I recently built a very
similar system, P2/300, 128meg SDRAM, and AGP card. My advice is to stay
away from the Viper 330. I'm not going to go into all the***details,
read all about it on the "ColossusII" section of my webpage. There is no
advertising, just my experience (and opinions of course) with some of
the high end vid boards and hardware. For now I'd go with the brand new
Thriller3D 8meg AGP card from Hercules. It is a killer, does Rendition
and D3D acceleration, plus has TV in _and_ out(vid capture.) It uses the
newest Rendition V2200 chipset, Nascar2 has to be seen to be believed!
Mine came from CompUSA, they are the only vendor thay I know of, the
card was only released on the second of this month. I'll post some info
about it when I stop racing long enough to do some mundane benchmarking.
        All the best, Mike Davis
