In a word, quiters. Or in another word, losers.

Why the hell do so many people quit races? I'm slower than a turd on
wheels, 1:40 at Monza, yet by quiting these people are willing to
admit they can't beat me.

I can't keep up with the leaders, or even the middle of the pack. So
the only people I actualy see are the ones who had a spin or a crash.
But too often these Losers (with a capital L) just quit the race,
presumably because they can no longer finish first.

Just finish what you start, that's all I ask.

It's hard enough for me to connect as it is, quitting is not an option! I've
actually quit only two races, one because the latency was too high and I was
just going to cause havoc with the other racers, the other because a
thunderstorm rolled in and I like to unplug the computer when this happens,
having lost one already.

Stay in the race, we can all use the practice!

Hey, that's me!

Sorry, Joe, can't do. The reason is simple, I rarely do a Shift-R. I
tend to race like in real life, as if can die any time. For me, those
sprint races from Shift-R to Shift-R just isn't fun. If I am dead, I
am dead.

Try it sometimes, actually it is more fun.

Hey Jpe, what makes you feel that all of the people that disconnect quit?
Why do you call all of them losers with the capital L? Haven't you
considered the fact that many a time players are disconnected??
I get disconnected 75% of the races I join, if not more. Been playing on
VROC for a month now on the weekends and so far have completed 2 races, one
of which I hosted.
Before you call anyone anything you might consider the poor w\quality of the
dialup connection that the majority of us have. Believe me, I'd like to
race, I can do mid 1.29's at Monza but am constantly disconnected, and that
pisses me off that you call people like me Losers and quitters.

Because the vast majority of them are only "disconnected" after they
spin out and are passed by the pack.

Hey Joe,

If I break my car, my race is over. I don't do "shift-R".

If that makes me a loser in your eyes, so be it.

Remco, if it was a league race with that particular rule, I would agree,
but in pickup races, there's nothing wrong with using Shift-R.  By having
someone quit simply because they're trying to simulate real-life as close
as possible is no fun for the others in the race that want to race
against as many other people as possible.

If you feel so strongly about it, only run in Pro races so as not to thin
out the field for the rest of us.

Don't forget, I only quit after an accident. I do everything to avoid
such an accident, and to be honest, in most cases, another driver is
the cause of the accident. Ever seen a first corner carnage? Did you
notice that almost all people hit Shift-R and floor it? To get 4 yards
further, so they can Shift-R again?

I don't think that is fun. After a Shift-R a race isn't pure anymore.
Suppose I am batling in the top 3, close racing all the way. And then
a backmarker shows up, ignoring his/her mirrors, taking me out. The
next situation is I am 10 seconds behind, with a full tank and cold
tires.

For me the race is over. Normally I never can get by the lead again,
and batling on cold tires with people on hot tires mostly ends in an
accident. So you have to let them go, if you don't want to take them
out. (You know, race like in real life)

Of course I understand it isn't fun for the host. And I regret that.
But the truth is, some drivers drive beyond their skill, and there is
the problem. I don't yell, I don't scream, I am "dead".

% I wish more hosts would start "Pro" races...

Well, there's nothing more fun than hosting a Pro race to be taken out
by some idiot on the first lap and then having to sit and wait for the
race to unfold.  Only to host another Pro race and play Deja Vu all over
again.

Actually I don't have anything against Pro races, however, due to
latency and clock smashes, it's all too easy to be taken out even if you
were a hundred feet from another car.

Just because it's a Pro race doesn't mean that you have Pro racers
joining.  As a host, I would rather host races that people can stay in
(even if it requires them to Shift-R) rather than force people out of
the race due to some Speed Racer wanna be.

>For me the race is over. Normally I never can get by the lead again,

That's what I'm talking about as an utterly LAME reason for quiting.
Can't get the lead, race against the middle of the pack. Can't catch
them, race against the trailers like me. When you quit you are
admitting you can't even catch a slowpoke like me - which truly is
lame.

I unserstand the point about playing realistically, no Shift-R after
crashes, but if that's the way you want to play wouldn't it make more
sense to join or host Pro races?

Another thing, I haven't been in any races with severe startup
problems. The people who quit are just as likely ones who've spun out
on the fifth lap, when their quiting is just a childish form of
sulking - "Wah! I can't win so I'm taking my car and going home!"

I do understand that, though it seems you would be happier in Pro
races.

I'm talking about the losers who just spin out (not crash) and then
quit because they can't finish first.

I'll never quit out of a race unless my car breaks. Even if I know I
can't catch the leaders, I want to finish.
