RASCAR Pocono - Post Race

by Larr » Mon, 10 Jun 2002 06:56:53

Since I couldn't finish, figured I might as well start the post-race thread
:)

This is probably the worse race I've ever had!  Talk about humbling :)

First, someone accidently punted me in the tunnel-turn.  I think I spent 1/2
lap in time sliding on my roof and side.

Got fixed, but the car was never really right after that.  I was driving a
brick and couldn't get out of the low 57's.

Then I lost 3rd gear for no particular reason.

Then I had engine damage, again for reasons I don't understand.  There was
no indication of trouble and all guages were well into the normal range.

Took 2 min in the pits to fix the engine.

Then got a bogus BF for not entering the pits safely.  Horsepuckies...
Reviewed the entry and it looked fine to me.  I wasn't speeding because I
didn't even have enough engine to DO 55mph :)  Cost me another 30 seconds.

Once back on the track after about 3 laps it was apparant that I was down a
cylinder or two.  I didn't want to stink up the show so I pitted for good to
stay out of the way.  Closure rates were too high.

Now, there's one thing that has me confused.  After the first incident where
I was slowed to low 57's, I kept high in the corners to stay out of
everyone's way.   I left the low lane clear and free for all cars coming up
on me.  BUT... On a few occasions the overtaking car didn't go low and go
around, like I expected them to.  They just stayed high with me and smacked
me in the rear.

I've always stayed high and clear in these circumstances so the faster cards
could keep the fast line and go around me low and safely.  Never really had
a problem with it until today, and through 4 years of doing this I always
thought this was the right thing to do.

Am I mistaken?

Is this "Just Pocono" and the way it is?

I forgot to save the Replay, so I can't review the race :(

Oh, well.  There's always next week :)

Obviously don't know exactly what happened, but imo, Pocono, along with
Darlington is a track where it's better to let a faster car go high.  But
either way should work.........

RASCAR Pocono - Post Race

After getting punted a couple of times, I thought this over.  No matter
what, I came to the same conclusion that staying high was better.  Mainly
due to turn 3.

If I were to have forced the faster lead-pack high in turn 3, I would have
been pulled out of my car and gotten my ass beat :)

I think the tunnel turn would have presented problems too since it's such a
fast corner with such a tight exit.

There probably really is no answer to it :)

  Maybe so, who knows.  Fairly common in actual racing there though, fwiw;
slower car goes low.
But this if more out of the turn than in it, where it's safe to pass.  The
tunnel turn is a low groove only area in terms of passing, i.e.

But like I said, irregardless, if you're out of their way(as it sounds
like you were), they should have been able to get by anyway...........if
they used their heads :)

Regarding your black flag, fwiw, I'd be very surprised if it's bogus.
That type isn't speed related, it's related to how you got to the pits.
Personally, haven't seen a bogus one of those yet.
Always could be a first though.

Bottom line is that the lappers need to *HOLD* their line no matter where it
is on the track high or low.  If that was the case as it sounds to me, then
it's up to the passer to make a safe pass.

I entered the pits like I have every other time.  Absolutely no difference.
I was well under control, and came in using the proper lines.

Oh, well :)

Results say you were forced to pit because of an engine problem. They don't
mention entering the pits unsafely, nor a black flag. Strange.
