F1 2002 problems

Hi,

F1 2002 is behaving strangely on my box; the readme and other web resources
are of no help.

Every couple of seconds the game just halts for 1/10 of a second; in between
it runs smoothly (~50 fps).

My config: W2k SP3, P4 1.6, 256MB RAM, Radeon 7500, CMI 8738, waiting for my
FF wheel so just using the keyboard.  Current drivers installed.  Only a few
background processes active (no problems on any current game).

Any ideas?

TIA,
Andreas

Hi,

I have a similar setup and had the same symptoms. I run a networking
pipe throughput utility, NetPerSec that was causing it. The pauses
only occurred during F1 2002. I'd suggest running EndItAll2 to isolate
it.

I too have seen that symptom.  I fixed it by lowering the graphic
details until the FPS was higher.  I think it was Jens who said here that IF
your FPS is lower than the screen refresh rate, you will get those momentary
pauses.  So IF you have a screen refresh of 75hz, then you need to get your
INGAME fps up over 75.   I have my screen running at 85hz so I generally try
to get my fps in the 90's to 100's running alone and hopefully it won't drop
too much in a crowd.

Of course, disabling 'Vertical Sync' will correct those sorts of issues
also...

Vertical sync was disabled here and the problem still occurred.

ditto.  vsync OFF during the 3dsetup. Vsync off in windows via the coolbits
hack.  No vsync.

Well, if vsync is off, then screen refresh will have virtually no impact on
framte rate.

It seems to be true what Dave said - these momentary pauses go away when the
frame rate is well above the screen refresh rate.  But to achieve those
frame rates on my setup, I have to switch off so many details that even Pole
Position on my >15 year old Atari 8-bit looks better!

This is definitaly an F1 engine problem.

I would be interested in an explanation of how that could possibly
occur...doesn't make any sense...

The problem is fixed!  It was -- drumroll -- the MS Sidewinder (Auto Detect)
in the controller settings.  I don't have a joystick connected, but every
few seconds, the system went looking for it and caused the game to halt...

The only explanation I have now is maybe that with high framerates, the DX
subsystem is not checking for new joysticks... err.  Ok, glad it works now!
