Question for Papyrus........

by Gary B » Sun, 09 Jun 2002 15:04:20

Just wondering if there is any way of changing the number of
caution flag laps in N2002. My friends and I have just started
racing online and are not the greatest drivers yet and it would
be great if we could cut down on the number of caution laps
it takes before going back green. Turning off yellows completely
is not really desireable to us either.

Thanks for your time.

I would like to know this too. In league racing I don't know if it would
***things up too much , but if not my gas foot would not get so numb from
trying to maintain pace for four laps!

Blake, I have the patches, and read the readme, and can find no hint at how
to set yellow flag laps.....league admins have been looking for this for
some time now, 3 laps at some of the tracks seems excessive. Could be a
programming nightmare to provide all the possible combinations of caution
options if it was adjustable, but I dunno....just wish we could do it.

I think most people buy this sim for the realism, the easy way not to worry
about yellows is not to wreck. Sure the yellow flag laps take forever, but
they do in Winston Cup as well. Leave it alone and drive, it's a sim and the
yellow flags are very well simulated if one should wreck. Just my two cents
worth.

The yellows are setup to exactly simulate what happens in real WC racing.  Yellow comes out and pace
car collects everyone, the next lap around pit is opened to lead lap cars, next lap around cars 1 or
more laps down are allowed to pit, cars are all collected again and  goes green next lap.  This
usually means at least 3-4 laps at any circuit.

There was a server command line for that back on the NROS, and even N3 if I
remember correctly.

True, but that isn't going to happen much online.  The yellow flags that get
cause make people get bored with the race, and quit.  It's a no-win situation.

BUT, it has to be something a little deeper than that. I recall noticing at
one track (that I can't recall) that if no one pitted the first full time by
and everyone was on the lead lap, that we got the one to go. By the same
token, in that same race, once someone was a lap down, it would circle the
second time so lapped cars would have an opportunity to pit if they chose
and if no one pitted, then we got the one to go.

I would like the ability to set this so that it would at least go green
after the second time by so the lap down guys would be coming out of the
pits (if there are lap down cars that pit) to catch the pace line as it gets
ready to take the  green. I think that would be the most effiecient way to
go about it. How that would work at Bristol and Martinville would remain to
be seen...

I wish they would put in a yellow flag "autopilot". The car would just hold
its proper position in line while we take our own porcelain pit stops. It
would relieve the boredom and allow us to relieve ourselves at the same
time.

They had that back with their first title, the original Indy 500 sim
where you raced a blue car or a red car or a (?)yellow(?)car against two
tone cars that vaguely resembled the color schemes of drivers of that era...

I do NOT remember that feature, and I ran several full races.  Are you SURE
about that?  How was that enabled?

Yeah, having wrecked several times under yellow, I sure didn't notice
that...

Well probably then you guys were NEWBIES who raced the PC version.  We
had the Amiga version with mouse steering that most likely came out long
before the pc release...((I hope I'm not guilty of memory mixup)).  Big
tip...don't use the mouse buttons for the throttle and brake cuz the added
friction really hampers the steering...assign keys for the gas/brake and
only use the mouse for steering....
hahahah  That is IF you can find a version of that that still runs on
current machines...lol
