NTL is offering cable modem services this year at a flat rate of 40 pm.
Is this a rip off compared to US prices?

I have no idea what the exchange rate is however I pay $29.95 /mo (US) for
my cable modem service.

Compared with my conventional phone bills, I will be biting NTL's arm off to
the elbow when they become available :-)

That is true.  In North America we don't get billed per minute for local calls.
On my phone bill I get an extra $0.50 tacked on for "extended calls" -- to make
up for the hours my PC may be dialed into work or such.

As long as the flat rate makes sense in your budget, I would say go for it.

Jason.

Where does NTL cover?

40 a months is the same as BT charge for their ISDN rental and you have to
pay normal local rate call usage on that as well. So this offer look good at
the moment. Alison Hine has a section on here web site about here
experiences with Cable Modems and GPL. Looks promising.

Does this include the phone charges (I take it there are phone charges
with these type of things?).  Be great if you could reply via email as
well.

I think its been mentioned that cable upload speeds in the UK are being
limited to 128k - so don't hope to host any full grid races in GPL :(

Bt are getting 3000 people a day leaving to go to screaming net -
they're only processing about 250 a day.... :( typical
also its permanently engaged from what i hear
