I've gotten my feet a bit wet with vroc and it is fun. it is also
tough on newbies :-)
I got crashed into a few times which ticked me off (but I just assumed
it was my fault). Once i went way left and slow in the place between
the first and second lesmos to let a faster driver by and he hit me
anyway. I think maybe the best thing to do is not actively let people
pass and rather just not press. My most interesting moment was
navigating through a *** start at rouen (really cool weaving past
the spinning cars and not get hit--probably pure luck as there was a
tiny bit of warping)  just to get rear ended at the *** hairpin
(think i need to turn steering hack on for that one). People really
hate being stuck in the pack and if they overdrive to get past it and
disconnect if they fail to. Actually the disco's really annoyed me
because by the time the race is over only the top drivers are still in
leaving me nobody to try to beat. Still, I got a new PB at Rouen
online (still about 10 seconds off the pace). I swear I can't find out
how people go so stinkin fast--i feel like i'm hammering it just to
watch some racer-x fly by me and then _I_ lose it in the next corner
while s/he disappears into the distance. My final comment is are there
any particular times when novices are online? I'd love to race people
with my skill level (gplrank chris) who at least try to be courteous.
I'm on cable in Southern California.  (and for non-novices: i'll take
anbody on. you talkin to me? ARE YOU TALKIN TO ME...)

I've spent a little time online myself but I've had no real problems with
finding a wide range of opponents.
My last race at Monza I qualified 2nd with a 1:28:XX and the last one on the
grid was 1:34:XX or something.
The real trick is getting people to finish the race!!!  Personally I don't
care if I'm first or last, as long as I'm racing someone I'm happy!!!

I think your best bet is to NOT make sudden changes in your line to
let someone by.  I'm pretty sure the guy following you had already
decided on going wide to pass you and you moved up thinking he would
prefer inside.  If you are slow...thats ok, speed will come, but let the
faster guys pass you.  Just be consistant so they can quickly size up
where you are driving and where you WILL be when then make their
attempt.

as far as novices...you could host your own race and include a novice
only comment or look for Eldred, he's pretty safe...:)

To let someone pass, just hold your line, and be REAL smooth, and then
they'll go by (if their faster) If you can't take the pressure their putting
on you, just don't accelerate as quickly coming out of a corner. To pass, if
your remotely close to someone, go down towards the inside, and try to brake
where you usually brake if not earlier, if your close, you'll probably get
them if your better, if your not close, or aren't as good in that corner,
you can try again. One thing, if the person is just SLIGHTLY faster than
you, don't make any desperate moves, just stay behind them, and usually,
after you bein on their ass for a while, they'll spin.

When you say your a newbie? How new are you? I'm almost considered at newbie
because I've had the game for about 4 months. Right now, I can do a 1:29.19
at Monza, the key to going real fast is trailbraking. Before I knew how to
trailbrake and customize setups, I did 1:36's! But then\, I just gradually
got faster, braked later, trailbraked more into the turns, got smoother, and
faster. Now, I'm trying to see if I can get a 1:28 and be a good driver :)

Good luck, have fun, and don't rearend people cuz that pisses them off :)

Thanks,
Alex
