As title suggests what do fellow UK VROCers think about the wave of
free ISPs.

I have been doing some back top back testing this weekend and have
found  l;ittle difference between Demon, Tesco, Freeserve , Line one
etc, in terms of ping and lag.

Anyone else considering ditching their pay ISP. Reasons ?

Don't do it, the pings on Freeserve are slightly better than *** net but
the packet loss can be horrendous, Breathenet are even worse, very highpings
and packet loss (lots of disconnects). They're worth using as backup ISP's
incase of probs with your standard ISP.
Saying that though, *** are going to be free from May for non subscribers
so I may be looking for another ISP if it goes the same way.
Also in What PC April 98 there is an article about the running costs of the
free ISP's and apparently for every 5 pence we spend on the phonecall to the
ISP, BT keep only 0.7p The remainder being shared between the network
operator, ISP and whoever runs the servers and modems, which may be what is
preventing the Telecom infrastructure from expanding.

I suppose there will come  a point where the falling cost of
technology and the lack of potential new subscribers (there are only
so many people who will go onto the Internet even when it's free- a
'saturation' point) will make even free ISPs a viable and competitive
service - they will be able to afford the resources to cope with
demand - look at how the _global_ cost of Internet access has come
down over the years. It remains to  be seen if we have reached that
point yet in the spring of '99.

As I said, I have also been trying Tesco who have their service
provided by *** (I think I'm right), and the performance on VROC
has ranged from the excellent to the truly mediocre. I get the same
with Freeserve. Saturday  a.m. with Q2 on Freeserve was the best seen
on _any_ ISP ever.  _no_ packet loss or lag at all (unlike Demon).

My point is that if you have 3 or 4 free ISP accounts (and why
should'nt you !) you should be able to find one which is performing
acceptably for on-line *** at any one time.
