This is a little out of bounds, but does have some relevance and I couldn't find
a specific NG to ask, so here goes:

Is anybody familiar with CompuServe 2000 as a ISP? Is it good, specifically, how
well does it work with online games such as NASCAR, GPL, Quake, GameStorm, Heat,
Kali, whatever.....  equally important is things like RealAudio and video
performance.... for general purposes such as Internet and downloading in
general, I'm not worried, but when it comes to games, I know that not all ISP's
work as well as others....

I currently use Mindspring, how good is CS compared to it....  I am considering
trying it, but what I'm looking at requires a 3 year commitment, and if I have
to keep Mindspring for *** and such, it's no bueno....

Thanks a lot and e-mail replies are more than welcome if this is too OT......

I used to have mindspring, and then I switched to ATT Worldnet.  What a
difference that was, ATT is so much better than Mindspring it aint funny.

I had the same experience.  Tried Mindspring, they had great ping but lousy
lag.  Way slow.  Then I tried Worldnet and it worked great in online ***

I don't know about ATT - Mindspring offers unlimited use for 19.95/month -- and
while I really have had no complaints since signing up, I would have to agree
about the slowness... has not been much more than a minor nuisance tho'  -- (of
course, before MindSpring, I was using AOL, so damn near anything would've
knocked my socks off)

That's interesting, I'd like to hear how ATT is better, I've just switched
to Mindspring from (cough) AOL and the improvement is tremendous. I haven't
seen a warp in GPL since the switch, well except for the 0.10 sec lap I got
at Monza one night, LOL! Ping times were cut by 2/3 with very low lats. If
ATT is better, I want to check this out!

don - stuck with phone lines but always in search of a better connection<g>

It varies, depending where you are. But generally Compuserve is not a good
choice for online racing. High latencies.

I assume you are looking at those $400 rebates.  Sign up for a free month,
and try it out on your current pc.  Then if you like it, you can buy that
new pc and get your rebate!

One thing to consider though, 3 years is a long time.  In the next couple of
years, ADSL and cable are going to become more available and affordable.  I
wouldn't want to be locked into 19.95/month for 56k access for that long.
