Passing seems too easy.  All the cars are lining up waiting for you to out
brake at a chicane or at the end of a long straight.

It's F1 remember.  You're only allowed to pass
in the pits.  Careful you don't get a black flag!

Worse still, you might scare schu :)

This may seem like sacrilege on this NG, but I found that the GP500 and SBK
motorbike races this year were, as usual, much more fun.

Yes, I prefer GPL for playing, but for watching? Can't beat the 190BHP
two-wheelers outbreaking each other like lemmings.

Watch this and make up your own mind. :-)

You'd think a slide like that was a severe***-up if you didn't see him
doing it almost every lap. The stupendous thing is when he lifts the front
wheel as soon as the bike stops sliding.

Garry McCoy, total Lemming.

The golden age of F1 was 1967, the golden age of bike racing was 1999,
and going strong.

Plus, you don't see F1 drivers trying to kill each other on the track
anymore.  Or punching each other in the pits.

There's just no passion left.  That's why I play GPL, but watch GP500s
and SBK.

Any news of a realistic yet working bike-racing game out there?

Holy...um, crap!  I watch the bike races when I see them.  They're usually VERY
exciting.  I still think those guys are CRAZY...<g>

I assume you've tried GP500 from Microprose?

Do you want more?  I can barely cope with it as it is in terms of
realism / difficulty.

There are bikesets available for the 2001 125, 250, 500, SBK series as
well as some odd ones like the Suzuka 9 hour (or was that 8), etc.

www.gp500racing.com should give more info.

Regards all,

Here is a quote from an F1 coloum at Autosport.com

Bonus Brain Bender
There were 73 official lead changes at the recent Fontana CART race. How
many F1 GPs would it take to record a similar total? Give your answer in
seasons, decades or eons in you prefer.

If you can expect a lead change every lap, what value is a lead change?

:)  David that is the age old question.  Are you 'really' racing if you
make pass after pass?  Or is 'real' racing when ONE single moment defines
the entire race?
Here is a real world scenario...you are driving on a narrow lane
highway...with a long line of cars ahead of you.  Do you stay in line or
pick of one vehicle at a time?   My feeling is to nibble away...you can't
pass the leader and get clear of the mess until you've passed all the
lemmings.  Same applys to racing...Sure there may be alot of passes at
certain venues...but unless you are up there making those passes and, in
turn, being passed, you don't stand much chance of being there at the end
when it really does count.   The one fly in this theory is the recent Nascar
races at the tracks that have restrictor plate rules.(Daytona & Talladega)
At those races several of the favorites hung well back of the
pack...preferring to coast for the bulk of the race before mounting a charge
at the end.  This is due to the current rules package that limits the
ability of anycar to 'get away'...and I think we will see some changes next
year.  If I'm a sponsor of a major car, do I want TV & live viewers to see
that car motoring around near the back?  Wouldn't I rather think that my
millions are being more wisely spent if the car is dicing for the lead lap
after lap?
The most exciting race I have seen this past season was an AMA event at
Brainard where 6 bikes all had a legitmate chance to win with several lead
passes each lap and the top 4 spots were swapped in the very last turn.
Would it have been as thrilling if the six bikes had played follow the
leader for the entire distance and THEN made the same race ending moves?  I
don't think so.
I'd be willing to bet the lines separating the two types of racing(one
meaningful pass vs. lots of passes) would be separated geographically.  i.e.
The Yanks probably would favor the many passes and the Euros would prefer
one pass.  Does it mean one is better than the other?  What it most likely
signifies is the difference in how we have been exposed to racing over the
years.
The one thing you can say about American races....is that the race truly
isn't over until the last lap...on some(certainly not all but still too
many) F1 races, the race was effectively over after the first turn.
Finally, what displeased me the most this year in F1 was Silverstone.  For
the last 5 years or so...Mika and Michael have been the creme of the crop.
But rarely do they race against each other...differerent fueling strategies
usually meant that we'd see the two together at the start and then maybe one
other time in the race....So hardly ever did we get a chance to see the two
greatest drivers of this era go head to head...until Silverstone....There we
had MS ahead of a clearly fast Mika...did we get treated to lap after lap of
exciting dueling?  Did we see a tactical cat & mouse of feinting and
attacking?  No...we saw the world's greatest driver pull over and let Mika
by....shameful...even if the World Championship hadn't been a runaway..we,
the fans got cheated out of what could have been a titanic struggle.
