MS Force Feedback Wheel doesn't work

Hi guys, can anyone help.....

I can't get my MS Force Feedback Wheel to work in XP. There doesn't seem to
be any software to get it to work. Does anyone know how to get it to
work????

TIA

You can install the software that came with the wheel. The MS site says it's
compatible with XP, even though the software itself gives a warning that it
might not be compatible.
My wheel worked without the software, but I had to install it to get
separate axis.

You are one of the unlucky ones then.

I have made hundreds of PC's for customers with varying results.

I introduce them to sim racing if they are interested and i bring

my MS FF usb wheel along to demonstrate.

Obviously it worked on all Win 98/ME machines.

On the 70 or so Win XP machines it has not worked on 5 or 6.

I have tried to find a common factor but there isnt one.

Having an SIS chipset is the worst offender so far.

Various cures exist and they work for some and not for others.

GENERAL TIP

1.Do not install Sidewinder 4.0 software.
2.Then when the PC is at desktop plug in the wheel.
3.Calibrate in *** Options and then ingame.

SIS TIP

1.Go to SIS website and d/l chipset USB patch
2.Install Sidewinder 4.0 software.
3.Use as normal

SIS TIP 2

1.Add extra usb card
2.Plug wheel into this and not the mobo sockets
3.Install Sidewinder 4.0 as normal

The results have been so different with various equipment that i am certain
there is not just one cure.

One XP,SIS pc ran it fine,no problem at all.

One Xp,Ali ran it with the combined axis only, split was impossible.

One XP,Via ran it with brake always half on...!!!

LOL

Good luck there is a cure for your problem of it not working at all,but its
a case of finding what suits.

A list of your system spec, chipset etc would help.

USB or Gameport.

If it's a gameport, your options are severely limited.  There is no, and
never will be, any profiler software for the Gameport version, and your only
choice is the built-in mini-driver that comes with XP, which is not all that
functional and causes grief with a great many games, especially those that
don't support split-axis properly.

Only the USB version is compatible.  The gameport versions only support
SideWinder 3.02, which will never be updated, and 3.02 will not install on
2K/XP under any circumstances.

Another option is a gameport to usb converter. This will only allow the
wheel to work and you still wont get profile software.

The only real option (unfortunately) is to sell/give away the old wheel and
buy a new one. That's what I ended up doing.

Just make sure you don't buy another Sidewinder - why support a product that
doesn't support you?

I agree with getting a new wheel.

I do NOT agree with dumping the MSFFW.

Yeah, they***me off too, but it's not just Microsoft.  Just about
everyone is dropping GamePort support in some way or another.

And the MSFFW remains the best, most durable wheel set in it's price range,
and it has excellent pedals to boot.

He can always do what I do.  Keep the GamePort version for spare parts.  The
vast majority of the components are the same.  In over 2 years, I haven't
had to use any of them, though.

Maybe, but you'd think Microsoft could have provided better support for its
own hardware in its own operating system.

The other manufacturers may be dropping support for game port devices, but
I'm pretty sure most of their software works with XP.

It's not just the wheel - I had a Sidewinder wheel, joystick and gamepad,
and they all became next to useless when I upgraded to XP.

Thanks guys, I did a search and found out about the Mini Driver and it
works, in GPL at least, havn't tried anything else yet, but I'm back into
GPL and only GPL for now, so it doesn't matter, maybe in a few months when
something else comes along I might be in trouble again......

Don't know where you're based, but you could try:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/

Product code: UA22Y
or bung "gameport" into the product search.

I've got 2, and I'm very happy with how it works out.

No argument there...

But it still doesn't warrant taking the USB version off the shopping list
when it's the best choice out there in it's class.

In the end, it's not MY decision, and I don't have to live with it :)

Where you will run into the most trouble is with games that don't support
split-axis properly.  The mini-driver runs in split-axis mode, and I do not
believe there is a way to change that.
