N3 Screen Freeze

N3 Screen Freeze

by Mike Koga » Fri, 01 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Please let me know if you've experienced the following problem.

When running N3 I frequently get a screen freeze while driving. The screen
freezes, but I can still hear the sound, and can in fact actually control
the car with the wheel and pedals. The keyboard is basically locked out,
although I've tried to send msgs on the chat using the T key.

When it happens while racing online, my entire system is frozen and I must
hit the power switch. When it happens when racing offline, I can hit
ctrl-alt-del and get to the task manager, and ultimately kill the N3 task.

This is happening with a scary frequency. I am running on a PII 450MHz with
a PCI VooDoo2 accelerator card, Turtle Beach Montego audio, and a PDPI L4
joystick card -- wheel is an ECCI. I have DirectX6 and all the latest
drivers for all my hardware -- going to down-level drivers does not seem to
change the effects.

This is the only software (game or other) that has any problems on my
configuration. This system has run NROS perfectly for a year.

Thanks,
Mike Kogan

N3 Screen Freeze

Yup, happened to me...The only thing I changed from pre-  to post- problem
was that I ran Norton's defragger and, (I think this could be the key),
their speed disk option, or whatever it is they call it. This one,
allegedly, speeds up your best loved programs, and so far has ***ed up
Toca, Nascar and a couple of others. The solution offered to me would be to
run the Windows defragger, which will hopefully put the files back where
they ought to be. I've noticed that, for example, the Toca registry after
using the Norton defrag/speed thing, had entries pointing to the wrong .exe
file.

If you've both done this, we might have found a problem...

I've been having the same problem, but have not defragged since installing
N3 so that leaves me out of your though, Colin.  :-(

I am using a P2-450 with a VooDoo2 card, are you?  I noticed that Mike is,
and I'm wondering if that may be the common denominator.

I have a PII400, Monster 3DII (based on Voodoo 2) and a SB 128 PCI sound
card and I haven't seen this type of thing (yet). Do you have DirectX
6.1 installed? Also, do you have the 3dFx version installed? No
overclocking?

Yes, I have Direct X 6.1.  I am using the card in glide, with version 2.56.
Not overclocked.

My biggest problem is when hosting races... I get frequent lock up's, and
others seem to have the same trouble.  :-(

N3 Screen Freeze

by Mike Koga » Sat, 02 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Here is Sierra's response. Let me know if reducing the clock to 90 helps.
Since this wasn't a problem for N2 I wonder why it is for N3?

Mike

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Sierra Technical Support

This is a classic symptom of video card failure usually caused by
overheating. What brand and model of Voodoo 2 card are you using? The first
thing to do will be to lower the clock speed of your Voodoo 2 to 90 MHz, as
most Voodoo 2 manufacturers overclock their cards at the factory. Many
drivers add the option to adjust the clock speed from the Voodoo 2 tab in
Display properties so try to do it there first. If you do not have this
option, contact the card manufacturer to find out how to lower the clock
speed in your registry.

You can also try removing the case from your computer. If you have a small
table fan, point it at your Voodoo 2 card. This will lower the internal
temperature of your box by at least 10 degrees. If the lockups/crashes stop,
you can be confident that you are looking at an overheating problem. A
better fan, or an additional fan, should resolve this issue permanently if
that is the case.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance, and include any
previous messages with your reply.
