OpenGL or D3D?

I was running opengl, with the Ti4600 with 4x Antialising and 6 on the

settings barely 23fps, with vertical sync off on both cards. Really sick
over this, after hearing how much faster this card is. And the text in
Battlefield 1942 does not show up at all.

Thanks,

Make sure you thouroughly unistall the old GF drivers: Unistall, delete in
registry, boot into safe mode and delete in device manager, switch to VGA,
reboot and then install the ATI driver.

I read there's a bug with the ATI9700 and Direct3D and that there's a patch
for it on ATI's support pages. This could cause a prob in Battlefield, 1942,
Mafia or The Thing.

I also read a speed comparison on
http://www.radeonthetop.com/articles.php?id=40 where in most games the speed
advantage for the 9700 over the 4600 was a lot smaller than what the first
tests made it look like, and in Serious Sam (and I think under certain
conditions in Castle Wolftenstein) the 9700 was even slower than the 4600,
and isn't SeriousSam often used for OpenGL benchmarks? Just a thought. I
hope for you this isn't it.

Good luck!

Achim

I just upgraded to 9700 from gf3 and I have the same problem as you. I
totally reinstalled Win2k and I am still having poor frame rates. I
never dropped below 30 fps with everything on and 42 in front and 10
behind. Now I usually see around 23 to 30fps with all cars in front
and everything on. I guess they need to improve there drivers. It's
driving me crazy too. The only thing that went up for me was my
3dmarkse scores from 8100 to 12300. Maybe NR2k2 needs a patch to
optimize  this card.

Boxed it up and sending it back, no matter what I tried could not get it to
be even as fast as the Ti4600 I have.
Very Disappointing after all the reviews about it. And, NR2002 is my main
sim.

Thanks for the input.
Guess I'll wait on NVIDA's next big dog.

I upgraded from a ATI8500 to an 9700pro and am having great luck.
I run N2002 at 1600x1200x32 at 2xFSAA and 16-anisotropic. Frames
rate never gets below 70, usually 100+.  I'm running OpenGL,  I
tried D3d and took a pretty big frame rate hit, around 50~60 fps

Some ideas :
Try OpenGL
turn off  'wait for vertical sync'
setup you're AGP slot to 4X
AGP size to 64
Power cable plugged into card from disk drive connector ?
Fast write enabled in bios
Make sure you have no PCI card plugged into first slot
Next to AGP card. Heat and shared interrupt problems.
Check the ATI site.
Post in the ATI news group.
I remember seeing somewhere there are issues with certain
motherboards using via 266a chipsets. Although that's I'm
running on an AsusA7V266 with a 2100+xp processor.

Good luck,

Heehee, I wouldn't be surprised if nvidia sabotaged their drivers to
sink any subsequently installed ATI card.  These other people may not have
completely uninstalled the old drivers.

Have you tried D3D? I know with the 8500 cards you had to run D3D over
OpenGL.

Most problems with the ATI card seem to come from system that had a Nvidia
card in it before. Does make you wonder. Even if it isn't a direct sabotage
maybe they tweaked some other system files or drivers for the Nvidia cards.

Make sure you reset the Anisotropic filtering settings in NR2002.  When it
reruns the video configuration for the new card it usually resets it back to
the maximum settings, and that usually cuts the framerates in half.

I have never had that big of a hit with AF on my system (AMD xp1800 and
GF3). Do you have AF enabled in the graphics card options as well as the
game? Maybe its doing AF twice. Of course the 9700 probably can do more
levels than my GF3.

How come this guy is the only one that has a performance problem with this
card???? I think there is something fishy going on with this reviewer. I
have read a dozen reviews for this card and this review is the only one that
shows a Ti4600 even remotely close to the 9700. He must have the 4600
overclocked big time to even get a 3dmark score like that!

Am I the only person who missed the part where he posted his Ti4600
3dmark scores?
