AGP 3DFX???

by Mike McCloske » Wed, 19 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I'll be getting a Pentium II soon, and it has AGP built in.  I was just
wondering if anyone had heard of 3dfx cards that use AGP.  Thanks.

AFAIK, the voodoo cards do not come in a AGP version. However,
3dfx are currently developing the voodoo II and that will be
available in a AGP version. The voodoo II cards are planned for
the spring of '98. From what I've seen, the voodoo II cards
will be ALOT faster than the voodoo. Preliminary tests had
GL quake running at 100fps.

AGP 3DFX???

At this point in time there is no OS support for the DIME/GARP aspect of
allocating main memory to the AGP graphics card.  With the release of Win98
and NT5 that support is included.  Another aspect of AGP is the main memory
bus speed.  If your main memory bus speed is 66Mhz and you are using EDO or
FPM then there is not much advantage for AGP.  When this is increased with
future chipsets (100Mhz) and using SDRAM then your AGP performance will have
dramatic increase over PCI.  The 3DFX-2 code named Banshee is currently
under development.  Until the "Planets" align I would continue using a PCI
3D accelerator.

VooDoo-2 is the 3d-only version and Banshee is the 2d/3d
implementation.  You can find out more at http://o3dfx.allgames.com ...

Good luck

Doug

P.S.  You can expect to actaully be able to buy it 1q98 or 2q98 ...
