VROC and XP, no race list, help

by Jay Freel » Fri, 29 Aug 2003 12:42:53

I've just gotten a machine with XP, and am trying to get VROC working.
Now first I've got another machine about 2 feet from me, running WinME.
It is running VROC just fine, and hosting a race right now.
Both are behind a router, which is working pretty well (only 2 guys
connected but... its working). The XP machine's version of VROC is
configured just like the other one. I've run the ip fix, and compared
both ini files.
On the XP machine I can get in the chat room, just no race list.
I've reselected the path to gpl (C:\sierra\gpl\) and even went into to
regedit to check.
And I can connect across my local lan and race just fine.
I just want to race on VROC with my shiny new computer.

Intel P4 2.6, 256mb memory
Nvidia Ti4200
Dlink 704 rounter configured to be able to host gpl races.

Thanks for your attention.

I seem to remember something about deleting a DLL from the VROC folder in
order to get it working under WinXP....

Riched.dll (Riched32.dll?)or something should be deleted but it will just
remove the annoying warning at startup. WinVROC should work if the file is
present. It won't run the Win9x version of riched.dll anyway, but use the
one that comes with XP.

The racelist IP is probably not updated in his WinVROC. Try this little fix:

You may need to open certain ports on your router heres the macro i use in
vroc
GPL now uses a range of 21 consecutive ports ([32766..32786], by default)
for client/server communications, and ports 6970 for status broadcast and
6971 for ping responses

 try that

I have a similar setup to you, although with a few more machines behind my
router.

Firstly, your vroc.ini should read as follows:

[VROC]
Address=racelist.vroc.net

on all your PC's. As already mentioned, on NT/win2k/XP PCs you need to
delete or rename RICHED20.DLL to RICHED20.DL_ or similar.

Once you have a racelist on your XP machine you still won't be able to join
via vroc though. As I understand it this is because you both have the same
IP address (your router's) so you need to join locally anyway.

I believe this is what is called server loopback. If your router does not have
this feature you cannot join races hosted on your own server through VROC.

Thanks Malc. That worked.

Surprisingly, I just changed the vroc.ini from
Address=ip address
to
Address=racelist.vroc.net

restarted winvroc and ..... race list.

On the WINME machine I'm still using the ipaddress???

Now I can race on VROC from my new, fast machine (and still go slow) yet
host from the "other" machine and connect across the local lan.

!!!! Just discovered that running the vrocip.exe on the XP machine was
NOT working, checked the ME machine and it had racelist.vroc.net as the
address. Shoot...

Thanks again

On vroc.net there are listed two vrocip.exe. Just one of them worked for me
(speedfreek). Or maybe running it the second time did the trick. :)
