Did you delete Richedit20.dll or whatever it's called btw? It's only
needed for win9x.

I just tried vroc under XP - worked fine for finding and connecting to
races, but I can't chat.  It says "connection to chat server unexpectedly
closed" or something like that.  Any idea what would cause that?

I get that occasionally in Win2k, I have no idea why but the length of
time it takes to connect to chat depends on your firewall. If I have mine
'stealthed' it takes a good 20-30 seconds to come up and sometimes can
time out with the same message you get. If I'm not 'stealthed' the
chatrooms come up virtually instantly.

I am not using a firewall but I am running behind a hardware NAT router.
Would that create the same type of problem?  I have been able to use other
types of chat programs with the router before, without having to open a port
or take the router out of stealth mode.  Do you have the same problem with
things like AIM or IRC or is it just VROC?

I use a NAT router with a firewall too, so if your problem is similar to
mine but just a little worse, it may just be that you have it locked down
more tightly than vroc would like.

I'm no expert on firewalls though, and vroc is the only chat app I use.

Try opening up port 6667 on yout firewall, or redirecting 6667 to your
PC's IP.
You can change the default IRC port in vroc options if you want too.

If you enable port forwarding for ports 113-114 TCP, the chat will come up

Would that be TCP or UDP?

AFAIK it's UDP, but I have mine closed incoming, open outgoing with
stateful inspection. You don't need to allow it (chat) to act as a server.

Ah, okay.  Outgoing is open by default on my NAT router, so I shouldn't need
to do that.  Thanks.

That didn't seem to work.  Odd thing too is that I can use other IRC
clients.  I tried connecting to the VROC chatroom with GAIM and it came up
fine.

I have a router with NAT enabled. Unless I am hosting a race, I do
not leave *any* of my ports forwarded, and I can connect with VROC
and chat at will. I must admit to missing the start of this thread,
but if the original problem is an inability to connect to chat within
VROC, then forwarding ports is not it. What about a firewall? Do you
have one running? The default setting for XP -- IIRC -- wants to turn
on the XP firewall. Make sure that is turned off -- or set to allow
chat to the VROC chat host.

I checked, the XP firewall is turned off.  Good to know that I don't need
any ports forwarded.  Which router are you using?  I have a Linksys BEFSR41,
firmware version 1.44.2z.  Have not had any problems with any other games,
server browsers, or chat services.

I have one of the good old Netgear RT314 routers that probably cost
me over $200 back then. I wince when I see notices from people
claiming that you can pick up a router for less than $75 these days.
But then I think about what I paid for a Geforce 3 card when they
were new, compared to the prices now. <sigh>
