3dFX Voodo 5500 vs Geforce 2-MX400

3dFX Voodo 5500 vs Geforce 2-MX400

by J. Zac » Mon, 27 Jan 2003 00:00:30

I currently am running an AMD Duron 750 (I know - time for an upgrade)
with a GForce 2-MX400. I have an opportunity to acquire, very
economically, one of the Voodoo 5-5500's. I currently like to race:

N2002 & GPL and I'm of course looking forward to the IRL game, N2003,
RLegends, etc...

Question - would the Voodoo be any kind of a step up vs the current GForce?

Thanks
J.Zach

I'm currently using the Voodoo 5 5500 and cannot get the NR2003 Demo to work
at all,  it locks up at various stages (haven't ran the first lap).  So I
would strongly recommend staying with the GeForce card.  I'm getting ready
to purchase one myself and am hoping that when the FX card comes out the
prices may drop on some of the existing Ti Geforce cards.

My $.02

Nobody regrets it more than me, but Voodoo is dead. Mine has served me most
faithfully but is due for relacement soon. Classics don't count in the
*** world.

In visual quality.....in some games yes, in speed, marginally if any

The 2D quality is heads above the GF, but don't expect newer games to
run without gfx glitches, N2002 has known issues

As much as I loved my V5's, I can't recommend it now, not even over a
GF2....sadly...:-/

You can expect all kinds of problems if you have a MB with a via chipset.  I
got so frustated, I pulled my Gf2 out and put the V5 back in.  There is no
question that the GF2 was superior in every respect though.

I'm using a Voodoo 3 2000 and the N2003 Demo works fine. The only issue I've
found (so far at least) is that I cannot use the windscreen buildup feature.
If I try to use this, I can't see thru the windscreen. Other than this
though, it's working.

Keep what you have until you can upgrade CPU, memory, etc.

This review was 2 years ago. What about now with a GeForce 4
vs V5 5500 with a P4-2.4Ghz and 512 MB ram. Is the V5 still
competitive?

It depends on how cheaply he can obtain the V5, perhaps the GF4 is too
expensive in comparison.

All the best,

It isn't so expensive  when it comes with a new system :-) I still have
a V5 5500 AGP and my new system has a GeForce 4. I am just
trying to figure out if I need a V5 5500 PCI. Thanks!

wrote something like this:

Yes, in games that support glide ;-) In other areas the GF4 is alot
faster, as it should be with the price tag it carries...

Anyway, used V5's and used GF2MX's are about the same price, so that 2
year old comparison is still quite useful.
