Need advise: GP2 & Direct Link

How can we get a direct link (null-modem cable) to run smoothly in
GP2?
We are using a regular null-modem cable and we are having _some_
problems
to get this shit going.  It seems to me that GP2 is GP1 in SVGA with
the same
problems.  While in link, the game completely stops several time every
laps, and don=B4t try to get off the road (or even worse, into the
pit) on any of the machines, since the graphics then will stop at 20
fpm on the machine which is still on the road.
Multiplayer rules, but this is not funny at all.  Yes, we have tried
everything!
<gp2 use16550> surely works, but we can=B4t find more stability.
Both machines is top range-pentiums, and we are in the need for speed,
also while linked.

This goes over head not duck
