Sears Point Nascar race

by Eldre » Thu, 21 Jun 2001 03:34:39

I'm going to be in California this weekend(San Jose).  I'm considering renting
a car and driving up to Sonoma to see the Nascar race.  Is it reallistic to
think that I could even get a ticket?  What would be the suggested seats to try
to get?  I've never seen a Nascar race before, so any tips would be helpful.
Thanks.

an oval instead.

This isn't useful in the slightest but when I was in Florida I called the
Daytona box office 4 days before the 500. When the guy stopped laughing, he
offered me tickets to the Busch race instead (which I bought). Sears Point
isn't Daytona, but don't be surprised if it's sold out too...

Go to www.searspoint.com and order tickets online.  $60 in advance, $70 at
the gate.

Start/Finish and Turn 2/3 is sold out but tickets available for all the
other viewing locations.

Have fun and be sure to tell us about your experience.

I have been to 6 races in the past, not at Sonoma though, and getting tickets has
never been a problem.  You won't be able to buy them from the ticket office (Cup
race anyway), but there has always been plenty of tickets available just off the
track property.  Scalping seems to be OK since there are a lot of cops around and
it doesn't scare anyone as long as they are not on track property.  Depending on
how good of a ticket you want, you can scalp tickets for face value on up.
Example, Talladega two years ago, could have got cheap tickets at face value, paid
$100 over ticket price for seats in the first row of the second deck (remember in
racing higher is better!) in the tri-oval.  Remember when buying tickets from a
scalper, have a track map out that shows all seating (available on Internet).  They
always say "These seats are the best!"  Look at the tickets themselves and match
them up to your map before buying.

Allow yourself plenty of time!  I have been to Coca-Cola 600 three times and a 20
minute drive in can take three hours on race day!  Plan on getting there as early
as possible.  If your lucky and get there early, bring things to grill, drink, or
just hang out in the car trailers and buy your favorite racing stuff.  Plan on
taking 2 -3 hours after the race just to get out of the parking lot and on to a
highway that moves freely.  Like I said, I have never been to Sonoma, and I don't
know what attendance is there, but this has been my experience in the past.

Good luck and have fun,

Gary

PS

Don't forget your cooler, they let you bring in a 12 pack cooler at most tracks as
long as you have no glass.  Seating is VERY tight, so you wouldn't want anything
bigger.

====================================
I've gone to a few Nascar races and have never bought tickets ahead of time,
and have depended onthe kindness of others for tickets(read scalpers) and
only a couple of times have much more than face value--first brickyard(waste
of money)and '98 daytuna-worth it
Can't imagine a road course beeing sold out but ya never know--Most times ya
can get tickets for face value but the seats arren't always the greatest

Eldred,

You can get tickets to any NASCAR race, anytime  (even the Bristol night
race, if you know where to look)   ;]

You can get tickets to Sears Point from the front gate, however, so it shouldn't
be that hard.  I would choose (if I were going) either the top of the hill from turn 1,
or somewhere around the esses down into turn 10.

Rik, I'm surprised at you, I think if I see ANY other nascar race again it will be a
roadcourse this time...ovals are fun for awhile...but roadcourses are MORE fun...

Cheers!

Well before we worry about things like Tickets...here are a few general
tips..
A) if you are driving UP to Sonoma...don't rent a Porche Spyder.
B) Wearing a Black Leather Jacket over a white Tshirt will be dangerous.
C) If you come to a 4 way stop sign...make Dang sure the way is clear.
D) Remember you are  in California and it isn't the same as Detroit...put
the heavy weapons away..

True enough Jan, but i was thinking for a newbie the oval experience would
be better- nothing like having all 43 cars screaming down the frontstraight!
but I'm sure Sears will have it's own good points. Eldred lives near an oval
so i guess he SHOULD get to Sears if he gets the chance, he can go to MS
anytime.

Eldred,

I'm sure you won't have any problem getting a ticket to get into the race.
However, I live about 40 miles from the track and would never even entertain the
thought of going to this event for one reason.....traffic.  Believe me it is a
***.

Only way I would consider doing it would be by motorhome the day before.

LOL...very true.  I remember my first time at Atlanta...43 cars going into turn 1
at 170 mph is certainly a sight!

Cheers!

Damn - someone else mentioned the traffic, also.  Since you live near the
track, you ought to know how bad it would be.  I may pass this one up...  I've
been to the Detroit Grand Prix 3 times, and didn't have any traffic problems.
Are all permanent tracks plagued with that?  I've heard the same complaints
about Indy and MIS... :(

Actually, I have two tickets I'm not going to be using.  I *would* have _given_
them to you if you had sent me that SGGT service pack update CD you promised me
about a year ago.  But alas, I've decided to sell them to my next door neighbor for
5 bucks each as soon as I log off the computer.  Sorry.

I went to the '00 ALMS race at sears point last year.  I think a good spot
would be above turn 2-3.  Great action comming up the hill, and you can see
a long section in the esses in the distance.  However, when I was there,
there were no assigned seating.  It was more like bring your own chair.  But
that would still be a good place to watch it from.  These tickets were $40,
I don't know how much Nascar runs.  But it should be some excelent racing.
Oh yeah, above 2-3, you are on the left side of the track, so BRING EAR
PLUGS!  Nascars are much louder on the left side, as that's where the
exhaust is.
