GP2 - Settings for most realistic drive sensation

by Sylvain Ratell » Mon, 20 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I use a T2 Thrustmaster driving wheel with GP2 and I'm interested in
knowing the "Control Method"
settings that provide the most realistic formula 1 driving feel and
difficulty.

I presently have the following settings in effect and I don't know at all
if they even come close to
reality.  I do know however that the car is awfully difficult to drive !

Low sensitivity zone    95%
Steering help           Off
Opposite lock help      Off
Max lock                18 deg
Reduce with car speed   90%

Thanks to anyone who bothers to provide an answer !

Try 10-30%

The only way to go...

ON makes life easier

Should be smaller, even 13. I use 16

With this setting you propably can't  take high speed corners at all? I use
0%.

No problem.

low sensitivity = 45 - 55 ( the lower it is, the higher the steering
response)
steering help = off
opposite lock = on (or very difficult to correct oversteer)
max lock = 15 - 20 (makes turning more precise)
reduce with speed = 50 - 75 ( higher the no' the lower the sensitivity of
your steering at speed)
acceleration
low sensitivity = 100 (more progressive acceleration)
braking
low sensitivity =100 (as above)

hope it helps

I use 10% for the wheel. 95% must feel awfully spongy (sp?)

For the accelerator I also use 10% and 50% for the brake to help avoid
locking the wheels at low speed.

Indeed (unless you don't have a controller that is controllable enough of
course <g>)

But much less realistic. Having the PC jerk your rear end back into line
may make it easier to stay on the track but hardly makes you feel like
you are in control :(( When I see the very top times in the Hall of Fame
I occasionally try OL but always give up after a few laps. I may not be
the absolute fastest, but at least I am the one controlling my car <g>

I use 15 at Monaco, 12 at Hockenheim, 13 for most other tracks. I know of
one very quick driver who uses 35 degrees!! A higher lock is less tiring
in a 100% race since you don't need to move the wheel so much but a lower
lock is more controllable.

You shouldn't need to turn the wheel much with high speed corners so a
reasonable amount is OK. I use 50% and haven't noticed any problems in
corners and it helps keep the car from drifting on the straights.

Cheers,
Richard

Well Alessandro Zanardi (the ex-formula one driver made a .con configuration
file (named zanardi.con) for the T2 wheel and it was said that for him it was
the closest that he could come of the F1 feeling.

You'll find it at MasaYard's homepage, here's the address of the particular
page on which it is  http://www.edu.lahti.fi/~masayard/gp2/fast.html

Keep the shiny side up.. :-)

Try this setup it's in gpfiles of the GP2 cd. It works great with my
T1, now I only lose control when I touch the curbs

Sylvain,
Try enabling the opposite lock and/or steering help. They will only kick
in if you get seriously out of line. Your T2 uses potentiometers that
signal your game port too slow to ever be close to a real F1 car. You
have to acquire a sense of anticipation with this game and react just
before the steering or brake input is needed.  It's kind of like those
old European movies where the persons' mouth has stopped moving, yet
there's still words coming out.  My company, RASE Computers Inc. is
developing a joystick-port driving,flying, motorcycle, jetski, etc
simulator with a signal boost to remove this split second reaction delay
for more realistic reflex response. It's not out yet but if you are
interested drop me a line, I'll tell you more. I not trying to sell you,
but rather assure you that the delay from you wheel input to seeing it
on the screen is real, and therefore can be compensated somewhat wit the
driving aids in the software. Good luck. try beating my "joystick only"
record at SPA of 1 minute 50 seconds!

There is no one PERFECT setting for the above.  What one is really doing
with the sensitivity settings is compensating for the speed of their
computer/game controller.  What will work for one person's setup will
not "play" the same on some else's machine with a different bus speed or
different game controller.  Once I upgraded to Thrustmaster's ACM card,
I had to reset these settings.  I was unable to make some of the long
sweeping turns that were easy when using the joystick port on my
soundcard.

Also I figured out that I drive better with some specific Max Lock
values at some tracks. Some tracks require more steering 'amplitude'
(?), some less. I wish the Max Lock setting (at least) was in the Car
Setup. Maybe in a future patch ? :)))))))

Bumber, isn't it?  What's weird is that I seem to remember lock being
in the track specific set-ups in GP1!!
