Voodoo 2 and current sims?

by Stephen Battiss » Wed, 22 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Has anyone tried a new Voodoo2 card (Daimond monster II or Creative)
with any of the current dirving sims? (F1RS in particular)  I have a
P166/32Mb and enjoy GP2 but have been putting off buying a 3dfx since
Jan-feb while the Voodoo2 was on the way because:

* I expect VooDoo1 based cards to become very cheap very quickly
* Who will want one of those old things anyhow when you can have the
new tech?

So does anyone know if the new card runs the 3DFX 1 based games OK? I
don't want to shell out big bucks for one of these new cards and have
to wait another 6 months for sims to come along that will run it- or
in the case of GP3 about 3 years!

Thanks
Steve

I have the CL Voodoo2 and I run F1RS, GPL Demo, Nascar2, Formula 1, POD, and
lots of other 3dfx games with no problems. For F1RS you need to use the 1.08
patch or you get some font corruption. You also need to use the most up to
date drivers for the Voodoo2 card. It seems as though 3dfx is committed to
optimizing the driver set for the Voodoo2 cards. If you have any questions
on a specific title, let me know.

It seems the V2 needs the processing power of the P2/266 or higher to see a
significant frame rate increase. Systems with Pentiums/AMD/Cyrix seem best
paired with the V1. You get a situation where the V2 is  waiting for the
processor. With faster processors the frame rate seems to scale-up as the
processor speed increases. With you P166 a V1 would be great!

I would beg to differ. I have an AMD K-6 233, 98Megs EDO, ATI 3dPro
PCtoTV, and now Monster II.
Before I got the card today, I could barely run the GPL demo.  only
reasonably smooth at 520X??? with only two graphics options on.  Boom,
got the Monster II today, popped that bad boy in, and suddenly very
smooth with absolutely everything on at 1024X768. Nothing short of
amazing to me.  I would highly reccomend the Voodoo2 card to anyone.
If you want an in depth look at what the Voodoo2 will do over the
Voodoo 1, just go to  tomshardware guide,

If you did *NOT* have a 3DFX card before buying the Voodoo2 then you were
probably running D3D and that mode is a definite no-no with this demo.

I had a Voodoo1 and changed to a Voodoo2 (PII-233, 64Mb) and could not
detect any difference at all in the refresh rate.....smooth as a babys'
bum in both cases but no discernable difference between them.

There would be, in all cases, a slight improvement with a V II over a
V I because the V II takes away triangle setup from the cpu allowing it
to get on with other things. Of course, the really significant
improvement comes when the V I becomes a bottleneck as it does at about
the 200mmx mark me thinks. It also depends a little on the software.

I had no way of measuring or determining any differences, Byron, other
than my eyeballs!

Hi
If you are not going for Pll very soon, you are much better off with
V1 since the price / performance would be FAR better than V2.

V2 will ROCK only if you have Pll system

   800 X 600 and 1024 X 768 is very nice though!
