Win XP, GPL and Soundblaster Live....

by Cris Eichle » Tue, 14 Sep 2004 15:36:02

    Hi,

a while ago Itried to run GPL on a Win XP maxchine with a creative
Soundblaster Live Player installed. It kept freezing.. Then iwas told on
some forum (maybe it was even here on ras) that this combination just
wouldn't work... So my question is: Is there a way, that i can run GPL under
XP and STILL use the Live soundcard? I'd like to keep it for it's MIDI
capabilities.

Is there a workaround?

rhanks in advance

Cheers!

No particular reason why it shouldn't work, I have a SB Live 5.1 on
Win2k and it works fine as long as I turn sound acceleration down to
basic (one above none).

When does it freeze? In-car or as you start gpl?

Malc.

It freezes randomly when I'm in car. The screen freezes, the sound goes in a
loop.... I've been told by someone that older drivers for the Live may fix
the problem. Haven't tried that yet, because right now, i don't have the
card in the machine. I want to play GPL after all. and "never change a
running system"... but still, i want those great Midi Sounds the
Soundblaster has....

But maybe I should just put it in and fiddle around 'til it works....

Thanks for the reply....

Cheers!

The problem most people are experiencing with GPL and SBLive is distorted
sound, not system lockups. I had a SBLive and none of the fixes helped for
me. There was a lot of crackling and some times the sound went totally
bananas and made it impossible to hear when it was time to shift up. This
happened after a shift-R and a new shift-R would normally fix it.
Lockup and sound loops sounds like an IRQ conflict. It's been a while since
I last messed around with IRQ's but can you make sure it doesn't share it's
IRQ with something else? Putting it in another PCI slot might help.

(MS spell checker doesn't recognize IRQ and PCI) :)

Save yourself alot of hassles and frustation and get a Audigy2 card. I had
the same problems as you plus more in GPL with a Live card, got an Audigy2
and all is good.

Ditto with my SB PCI512 card (same chipset), now running a 12,- Euro
Hercules Muse Lt. It's simply not worth trying to sort it out.
