REVS - Geoff Crammond's Best?

by John Richards » Sun, 14 May 1995 04:00:00

I was just wondering whether anyone out there was/is an avid player of
Acornsoft's REVS, the c. 1985 F3 simulator for the BBC B/Master.

It was by Geoff Crammond who later wrote MicroProse's F1 game for the
PC. IMHO,, it remains the best single-seater simulator for any micro,
not so much in terms of Graphics/Sound/Bells & Whistles but very much
in terms of car control and the kind of empathy it inspires between
driver and road. Believe me, when the car is about to loose grip and
fly off the road, the good driver almost feels it and lifts off.

I would be interested in any discussion of this game - cm'on, start a
thread! I have not played it much recently, but I think I managed to
get my Silverstone (the old Silverstone beloved of Alain Prost with a
Stowe and a Chapel that were worth going round) time down to something
like 1:22.9. I must look up my old times and get round to posting them
(if ther's any interest).

Look forward to reading your posts.

John

I agree completely - none of this "third person viewpoint" that was
prevalent in other racing games around at that time; give me 1st
person "in the***pit" anytime.

Oh dear! Looks like REVS challange to me ...

All have to do now is clear enough desk space for the Beeb, play and
then post my best time ;-)

Never heard this one. See no reason why not: they are damm good
representations.

I would of course like to believe I am an unbelievably good driver!
Certainly I have never heard of (much less used Replay). I used to
follow the David Hunt tutorial religiously as far as Silverstone was
concerned and I got down to about 1:24.2. Then someone pointed out
that Woodcote could be taken in fifth gear - I had been taking it in
fourth. This knocked about 1 sec off my previous time. I believe that
I then tried this with 20/16 or even 15/12 wing settings and
predictably flew off the track more often than not. However, when I
did set a time it was, I think in the high 1:22's. I am certain that I
could get well down in the 1:23's.

Come on REVS players: we know your out there. Join the thread!

Well, Revs was the first racing simulator I used and I
still think it to  be best of all (especially
considering the computing power of a c64).
In fact, now that I have the emulator I would like
to drive around again a bit.
About the 1:22.9 on Silverstone...
Can you tell me the exact setup you used ?
I drove 1:23.8 with 21 F and 19 R but wouldnt
have thought getting below  1:23.0 possible.
What steering method did you actually use ? I used
the keyboard and still do with the sequel F1GP.
Was it better to steer then with a Joystick or
perhaps even a paddle ?

Something else : Did anybody else also try
to drive the whole circuit in reverse ?
I also remember doing some cool rallye turns
on the long straights just for fun...
And the long jumps over the chicane...
wonderful and horrible at the same time.
I wonder how often I ruined a really good
lap in that chicane..

Revvians unite !

Yes, I agree entirely - Revs is still the best racing game around,
and is one of the few things I still go back to my old BBC Master for...

I, too had noticed the tendancy to lift off when the car starts to slide
(usually a moment too late to avoid losing a place if you're racing,
but good enough to keep you on the track)...

Would anyone like to confirm/deny the story that the games circuits
were created by going out on the real things with giant tape-measures
and those things for calculating the radius of a curve from looking
at it... ?

1:22.9 ? Are you using the infamous Replay 6th gear? Or just an
unbelieveably good driver?

Without the aforementioned cheat (best use for Replay I've yet found...),
my times have never gone below about 1:24 ... but with it, I can get to
1:30.0 (ish - it's quite some time since I played, so I'd probably be
slower now...)...

I used to be able to get down into the 1:23 region and possibly my brother (
who was always a tough better than me) managed 1:22. REVS is without a doubt
the most realistic and absorbing racing game ever - its somehow more
captivating than Crammond's F1 simulator for the Amiga/PC (just REVS with
more colours really). I remember getting so involved in the racing,
especially on the last lap, that I would sometimes start sweating!

Sadly, I don't have a Beeb anymore, so I can't play REVS. Is there any hope
at all of an emulator for the RPC (or better still, a native version)?

Yeah, REVS was an old favourite of mine too, and of most people
I knew at the time as well.  Can't remember any lap times though...

The extra tracks were fun, but nothing compared to that original
track - I played on the keyboard and could almost go round it with
my eyes shut in the end.

One interesting little factoid:  I used to delve into the machine code
that made up the game, trying out little hacks to see what effect
they'd have:  one of these little hacks caused the car to drive
itself around the track!!!  Now that was freaky....  (it didn't get a
very good time if I remember correctly).

No need.  Just get hold of one of the many C64 emulators, and you can run
the C64 version (which was much the same) on your PC.  The disk image for
the C64 game can be found on many FTP sites.  BTW, has anyone got Revs plus
in a suitable format to use with the C64 emulators on the PC.  I used to like
driving at the Nurburgring, and of course Thruxton.

I managed a 59.8 around Snetterton. Got the photos to prove it. I meant to
send them into AU at the time but didn't get round to it. :-( I'll check out
my other lap bests, see how they compared. REVS is an awesome game, beaten
only (eventually) by Indycar Racer. F1GP just doesn't let you get sideways
easily enough. :-(

BRILLIANT game! That started me off being a racing simulator fan all
those moons ago. I'd love to find a BBC B emulator for a PC and some
means to transfer Revs onto my P90 Ninja PC!

I did quite alot to REVS, including, writing a track editor,
and an 'F1' version !!! At the end of the power calculation
it does LSRA,LSRA to divide the power by 4 !?! So one NOP
gets double power, two gets 4 times.

4 times the power didn't work all that well because you could
go so fast on the straight that the program stopped drawing the
edge of the track, and at bit faster it stopped drawing the grass
which made it rather diffcult to judge where you were !?!?

Also did a 'Econet' network version so two people could play
    against each other.

I've still got the notes/listings somewhere, but no longer have
    access to a BBC.

Ah yes, Revs is without a doubt the BEST racing game I have ever
seen.  I've got a copy of Saloon Cars Deluxe, but you can easily
be on pole for your class in that so long as you manage a complete
lap without going off!  Very disappointed with that, I was.

I sorted through all my old records and found that the best lap of
Silverstone I ever managed was a pedestrian 1:24.9 - although it
was with both wing settings over thirty.  I did that lap in a race -
records tell me I finished fourth, so I guess I must have spun or
something...

I don't know how anyone manages to race with wing setting below
thirty - I inevitably caused a horriffic multi-car accident at
the start whenever I tried it...

Come on, someone convert Revs to the Archimedes/Risc PC!

Hmmm - 1:22.9 eh? Well, my best time is 1:24.0 dead, done with 24,17.
The discovery that Woodcote can be done in fifth was rather important
in hacking the time down. Im impressed that anyone could stay on the
road in fifth with 15/12! By the way - does anyone else play with
joysticks?
The fastest time I know of (bar this 1:22.9 one) is 1:23.9, set by
a friend at sixth form.
Cheers,
        Toby

Well, seeing as you asked.....

My fastest lap time at Silverstone was 1:21.3. It did involve
taking the chicane flat-out in 5th though :-)

Yoiks! I used to use 15 on the rear and 10 on the front. These were kept
in a 60-40 ratio, as recommended in a book I got out the library on
F3 racing (yes, I was SERIOUSLY into Revs :-)
