GPL newbie: What to install and tweak

by Jone Tytlandsvi » Sat, 08 Dec 2001 20:21:55

Hi!

I've just installed GPL on my 800Mhz W2k Radeon. I have installed the
1.2Patch, d3D and NoCD. It's running fine at 1280x1024 with all details and
stuff set to max. I can't see the framerate though because Frapps won't show
a readable display in GPL.

What else should I do except practice?
Should I download graphics upgrades to cars and tracks, and witch ones?
Should I adjust something in the car setup or is it fine as it is?
Are some of the cars more preferable than others?
There are a difficulty setting that goes from Novice to Expert or something.
Will it only affect AI, or will the car be more difficult to handle on
Expert?
And, how good should I get before it's any point in taking it online?

I use to race NFS PU, and I spent quite some time with it until I found out
that all my cars was set up completely wrong. Don't want that to happen
again :)

Cheers
Jone.

Alt+F for frame rate :D

As for all your other questions - it's all about Practice - and I HATE
hearing myself saying that !!

Alt-F for framerate.

Practice some more :) . I assume you have a wheel?
Try Watkins Glen for starters. It's short and has a good variety of fast
and slow corners. Just a tip, at the end of the first long straight, hit
the brakes just before the big billboard on the left.

Yes. The cars out now are 1000% better than the ones straight out of the box.
Get the jfcarset from here
http://jfcarsets.racesim.net/

The GPLEA Eagle from here
http://www.gplea.org/  (check out the honda in the car projects page
too. Looks nice. Coming soon)
While you're there, get the carsound patch in the utilities section.

The Brabham from here
http://www.eureniusdesign.com/bruce/brabham.htm

Default setups have 100+ laps of fuel which make them a bit tricky to control.
Reduce the fuel load to about 10 laps worth.
Also, get some starter setups from Alison Hines page
http://eaglewoman.simracing.dk/gpl/setups.htm

For beginners, yes. The cooper (aka coventry) is the easiest to drive
but slow. The Lotus is the fastest but also the most twitchy. The
ferrari is a pretty good middle car. The Honda (aka murasama) and BRM
are not bad but heavy and slow, the Eagle is fast but not too nimble and
the Brabham is very nimble but lacks power (you can throw it round a lot
with some practice).
Start off with the cooper for a week or so then move up to the Brab or Ferrari.

They basically affect the outright power of the car. If you feel
confident, go straight for Expert but a few days at advanced level is
good for starters. The AI has 'global hype'. As you get faster, so do they.

As long as you drive sensibly and can at least get round a few
consecutive laps without crashing at every corner then go for it. Open
races tend to have people of all abilities.

Once you've got a lap at each of the 11 original tracks, take a look at GPLrank
http://newgplrank.schuerkamp.de/

Have a look at *THE* forum for GPL at http://www.legendscentral.com/ .
Lots of helpful people in there too.

*Unless* you have the twilight zone computer, like mine, where the Papy
framerate counter shows a steady 36, but the image is going by like treacle
at about 4fps.  It was really bizarre, and the only way to run GPL for me
was to have FRAPS running in the background.

Of course don't forget www.SimBin.com for setups and driving advice from,
for example, Doug Arnou.

See you there!

The Pits Superpatch at http://www.theuspits.com/owheel/gpl/gpl.html
is a pretty good compilation of graphics upgrades that saves messing with
many different (and possibly conflicting) files.

Yes and no - read what Alison has to say and use her setups initially -
http://eaglewoman.simracing.dk/gpl/index.htm

Yes!! Study Alison's site!
(These suggestions come from someone who is definitely NOT gifted and fast,
but is still willing to try because GPL is great fun!).

Yeah, It's a sensible thing to do isn't it?
I figured it was probably OK, it's probably set up right for a
newbie/average driver. And I wanted to drive, not fiddle with the car setup.
But it's not setup anything near right in NFS PU.
So when I read some advice about car setup, my world changed a bit. :)
(Thank you Jeff Reid)
The bad thing about it was that I misunderstood the toe in setting, and
slided it in the opposite direction. The handling improved dramatically, but
now that I have the toe in set right, I can probably cut a few seconds more
off my times when I get used to the new feel of the car.

(My spell checker kick's on slided. Slid? Sled?....)

I get around 25-30 FPS. That's OK isn't it?
Well this figure might decrase when I install the upgraded cars.

I've installed them and the two patches.
They lock up my PC, but I have only tried the High and Medium 3D wheels.
Hope it's works with 2D. If I ever go online I have to use the VROC wheels?

I can only find a Brabham Lite on this site. Is that the one?
The is reference to a "full version" but I can't find it. Or do I have to
download it in part's?

You should be getting the Full 36 with your system pretty much all the
time.  I think you must have something configured slightly wrong.  Do
you have the Direct3d patch installed ok?  Also, have you selected
Directx 7 inside the game (in the options / graphics screen).

I hope this helps,

All the best,

No, that's not ok.. do everything you can to get 36fps, with 25fps you
will have a hard time controlling the car.
Descrease resolution, move down the detail bias slider or buy a better
gfx card (I don't know your current system, missed your original
post).
And forget about installing upgraded cars as long as you don't
increase your current fps, the car updates will hit your fps even
more, especially those superb 16-bit cars.
