GPL Newbie Question

by Ekena » Sun, 02 Jun 2002 01:10:33

Hi All,

I just started playing GPL in the last week or so(I only got
interested in racing as a sport about two years ago) and I was
wondering if anyone could let me know what reasonable lap times are
for the novice trainer and the advanced trainer for the various tracks
(esp. WG and Monza).  I'm trying to learn this the "right" way w/o
using any of the driving aids and I like to check my progress.

Any other tips, learning experiences, etc would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Tim

Don't mess with the trainers jump right into the big dawg. IMO they just mes
you up for the real thing.

Tim,

Go to GPLRank, and you will find all the F3 (trainer) and F2 (advanced
trainer) times there. Just look in multiple choice hell. Here's the link to
the site http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/

Remind me to blow you into the weeds one day... <g>

Seriously, I somewhat agree. F2 and F3 cars aren't "fun" enough to drive for
most people to ascend the learning curve with. However, there's always the
danger one might get into the habit of using the F1 power to correct on exit
for mistakes made going in. While this may produce good results on a one lap
basis, it's very hard to be consistently quick driving as such. Moving into
F1 "from the bottom up" avoids this scenario to a large extend.

Online racing "in the lower categories" is, as a rule, a lot closer, so
racecraft is also best aquired in "the trainers".

Mind you, this is one of those "this is how I would do it if I were able to
start over"-opinions. Back when GPL was released I was***y enough to think
an Historic F1 career was the only thing worthy of my talent in GPL. I'm a
lot more humble now.

Tim,

You might want to pick up my GPLEGS package which you can find
here : http://www-personal.umich.edu/~epickett/gpl.html it's about
half way down the page.

It's a series of text files and sample replays which many have found
useful.

Apart from the first couple of days that I had gpl back in '99 I've never
used either trainer. ;-)

I'll have to give them a go sometime, but I just never got around to it I
guess.

You don't _have to go through the ranks to be good, but practice is practice
& it's all good.
